A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
The Youth Centre JUKUS is located at the city center of Graz which is
the second largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state
Styria. Geographically, city is situates on the Mur river, in the
south-eastern part of Austria. With six universities and over 40.000
students, Graz is known as a student city and has a multicultural
atmosphere. As the city has many historical monuments and very well
preserved "Old Town", Graz was the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2003
and included in the list of World Cultural Heritage Sites of UNESCO in
1999. More than 280.000 inhabitants are living in Graz.
The Youth Centre JUKUS is working "for youth" and with the "energy of
the youth". As our target group is composed of youngsters with
migration background, our main aim is to make our society to be aware
of that these youngsters don't only have problems, but also they have
different needs, demands and a potential power. We see them as a
natural part of our society, our city and country and we are trying to
support their integration to the social life. We serve them an
additional support to deal with the problems of daily life, to develop
self-confidence, to encourage their willingness to learn, to improve
their sense of responsibility, tolerance and respect.
We are working with youngsters between the age of 12 and 25, who are
coming from Armenia, Chechnya, Former Yugoslavian States, Iran, Rumania
and Turkey. Currently our Team is composed of 5 people that two of them
are Social Workers. We are also working with volunteers from our local
community, who are students and spending their spare time by helping us
to organise events at the Youth Centre.
Our Youth Centre represents an open space for youngster to spend their
spare time with different cultural, sportive and social activities. We
offer them a library, café, internet, video and music room, some games
like table soccer, billiard, dart and a place for them to play
volleyball and football. During the year we are organising various
events and activities like trainings, workshops, festivals, concerts,
holiday camps, trips at the countryside, sports competitions. They can
take part at the regular activities of the Youth Centre and also they
have the opportunity to organise special events according to their own
interests. Furthermore the social workers of the Youth Centre are
always ready to support youngsters through individual counselling when
they have difficulties with their families, friends, in school or at
work.
The Youth Centre is composed of a building with three floors which
includes a garden, café, play room, party room and office rooms. It is
open 5 days in a week, from Tuesday to Saturday. During the week Youth
Centre is open for youngsters from 15:00 to 20:00. On Friday and
Saturday it is open till 22:00.

to observe the situation of migrant youngsters. In addition to cultural
learning, the Volunteer will gain organisational skills and learn more
about the Youth in Action Programme. He/she will join the educational
facilities provided by the National Agency and we will be encouraged to
attend seminars and conferences related to Youth Work.
The role of the EVS Volunteer will be contributing to the daily work of
youth-workers and supporting youngsters at the Youth Centre. He or she

C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
We are looking forward to work with a young, open-minded, respectful
volunteer who is interested in youth-work. The volunteer is expected to
be very motivated to work with youngsters with migration background and
he/she should easily get in contact with them. Although the working
language at the office is German, we are also able to work in English
and knowledge of Turkish will be useful. We would like to invite a
female volunteer as we are trying to improve the participation of girls
at our Youth Centre. To ensure an objective recruitment process we will
discuss about the applications for our project in our Team. We are open
to work with any kind of organisations.
D. Special needs (if applicable)
JUKUS is open for a Volunteer with different cultural background; we
believe that this would enrich the work of our Team and Youth Centre.
We would like to encourage young people who are facing with economic
difficulties and who have fewer opportunities as we think that EVS
Programme would have a bigger impact on their life.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
After the arrival of the Volunteer, there will be an orientation
training, to ensure his/her adaptation to the city and working place.
At the first week of his/her stay, he/she will receive a info-kit
including the contact details from the organisation, Austrian emergency
phone numbers, map of the city, plan of his/her living place, rules
about the working and living places, information about the AXA
insurance. We will also give the Volunteer a cell phone with an
Austrian card. His/her mentor and tutor will help and support him/her
to get used to the working conditions and give all information about
the Youth Centre. He/she will not be alone at the Youth Centre.
In case of conflicts, first the mentor and then the tutor will talk
directly with the Volunteer and he/she can get in contact with the
LOGO, EVS Coordinating organisation in Styria. LOGO will also help the
Volunteer to get in contact with the other Volunteers in Graz.
