Centro de Alojamento Temporário de Tercena is looking for one EVS volunteer
CAT de Tercena is a foster home funded in 2002 that belongs to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Cascais and is based in Tercena (Barcarena). It hosts 48 children and young people from different ages (average between 6 to 23 years old), victims of maltreatments inflicted by their families (ex: negligence; physical, emotional and sexual abuses; moral-legal/educational maltreatments; drug/alcohol addiction).
Period:
child/youngster integration, according to the community resources (attend to school, participation in sports, leisure, cultural and scouts activities);
prepare the child/youngster to the future: return to the family, adoption, longer stay in the hosting organisation or in other foster home;
The children/youngsters have a normal routine life: go to the school, have extra-school activities, have friends, but instead of living with their family, they live together in a house.
Generally, these children/youngsters have some development problems in some fields as verbal communication, establishment of social
relationships, internalization of rules and school performance. So, in these situations all availability of professional staff is needed to follow children evolution: psychiatrists, teachers, educators, doctors, etc.
CAT de Tercena is situated in Tercena (Barcarena), a small residential neighbourhood part of Oeiras Council between Tagus River and Sintra mountains and near to the main road connections between the capital and 2 other important places of Lisbon district: Sintra (UNESCO Word Patrimony) and Cascais (touristic village).

The main aims of the foster home are: protection of children and youngsters from dangerous family situations; provision of basic living conditions, affection and safe environment; supply psychological care; make the diagnosis taking in consideration different issues (ex: health, social,educational, psychological, emotional, physical needs); definition of a Care Plan (Life Project) of each child and youngster; privilege the

Tasks
60% - Leisure time (afternoon/evening and/or weekends): - animate and implement leisure time activities for the children/youngsters, with an entertaining but also educational purpose (ex: sports,music, singing, dance, theatre, handicrafts, watching movies, thematic conversations, etc.) - organisation of sports tournaments (ping -pong, football, volleyball, etc.); - accompany children in outside activities of the foster home (ex: go to the doctor, take children to/from school/playground/cultural places,etc.) - assist children/youngsters in computers use, managing the time and helping them to become familiar with the computer tools (ex: internet search, Word, Excel, Power point, etc.) 10% - Holidays (Christmas, Carnival, Easter, Summer) and Special Events - propose and implement specific activities related to the period of the holidays (ex: Christmas theatre play, build Carnival masks, games with Easter eggs, Summer camps, etc.) - help to prepare the Christmas party (ex: decoration, presents, etc.) and birthday parties 10% - School Support/Occupation Searching - help the children/youngsters to do school exercises, specially those with special needs; - help more intensively in areas where the volunteer feels more comfortable (ex: English language tutoring, Maths, …) - motivate children/youngsters to study and to complete their objectives (ex: with creative methods like games, music, quizz, etc.) - search for jobs, trainings, occupation and leisure activities on internet to improve youngsters life; 10% - Improvement of the facilities and Organisation of the foster home (must have special skills!!) - restore some room, paint or draw in some walls to “give life” to the house - organisation of rooms according to the activities to be done - separate and catalogue offers from the local community: clothes, shoes, toys, etc.; - organise the foster home: folding clothes, put the clothes in the children closets, arrange the rooms; 10% - Divulgation of Youth in Action Programme (in schools, Universities, youth clubs, youth events, etc.) - Organisation of exhibitions, presentations and conversations with Portuguese young people or future EVS volunteers to motivate young people to be more active or give visibility to their EVS project; - Inform young people about the EVS and provide information about some aspects of the volunteers country (ex: culture, language, etc.)Criteria
Highly motivated to work with children/youngsters with a difficult past and social background. Is expected the volunteers have a positive attitude, patience and good listening capacity. The volunteer have to work sometimes in shifts, at night and weekends. A basic knowledge of Portuguese, some previous experience with children/youngsters and special interest on music (ex: rap, African music), dance (ex: hip-hop) theatre, sports (ex: karate, football, volleyball), can be an added value, in order to facilitate the relationship with the children/youngsters and help the volunteers to accomplish their tasks. Before the project starts, the volunteers are recommended to get in direct contact with children/youngsters with similar background in their home country, in order to be more aware of their needs and understand the environment of a foster environment, etc. During this time, the volunteers can try to implement some activities as a previous test in order to better prepare themselves and learn by doing. Must be: very human, self-motivated, creative, open minded, tolerant with self-initiative, willing to take on new challenges, very flexible and ready to help in different tasks, with good adaption to different realities and ready to live with different conditions and environments they are used to in their original country.Portugal
