Catholic Culture Centre "Windmill" is a non-governmental educational institution providing after-school activities.
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
Catholic Culture Centre "Windmill" is a non-governmental educational
institution providing after-school activities. It is located in Fordon
district, ca. 15 kilometres from the centre of Bydgoszcz town. Fordon
is occupied by over 80 thousands people. There is no cinema, theatre,
or any other cultural entertainment in Fordon. The target group of the
centre's work are children and teenagers, however adults may take part
in almost all of the activities as well.
Our main aim is to support the psychical and physical development of
children and teenagers. We provide entertainment in many fields -
education, culture, tourism, sport, music, art, etc. regardless
physical and mental differences as well as the financial status. We
also provide activities for disabled people. Many children's parents,
who participate in classes in the "Windmill", cannot afford to pay
regular fees. During the current school year, the "Windmill" has been
offering the regular after-school activities for more than 600
participants per week. Our offer covers 38 sections and evening
classes: sports (football, tennis, chess, aerobic, dance lessons,
rhythmic), theatre groups, kindergarten club, music and art classes,
classes for disabled and ill people, anti-drug workshops and other
meetings.
CCC "Windmill" provides Kindergarten Club for children between 3 and 5
years old. Once a week Club for Young Mothers is organized. About 10
mothers with babies meet, talk, play.
Our activities include also occasional events (performances,
competitions, meetings once a month) - these are attended by a few
thousands of children and teenagers during the last year. These events
were addressed to the citizens of Bydgoszcz, however some of them were
of regional or countrywide range. The purpose of our work is to offer
children and teenagers the opportunity to discover and develop their
talents and - at the same time - to protect them of dangerous social
processes leading to depravation and pathology.
We also have groups of regional volunteers. Because of the huge enquiry
and the big amount of children, youth, disabled and ill people who
attend our classes, we would like to invite international volunteers to
join us and to work together with us for needed people.
Bydgoszcz is a quite big town (ca. 400.000 inhabitants). It is over 650
years old. The biggest problems of citizens of Bydgoszcz town are
difficult economic situation, high unemployment (ca. 25%), and poverty.
The economy is not developing as well as it would be wished. Now that
the factories are old and unused, many workers are unemployed. In
Bydgoszcz there is an adequate public transportation - bus, taxi,
train, tram. 30 kilometers outside of Bydgoszcz start the Tucholskie
Forests. It is a beautiful place, unpolluted with fresh air and very
good ecological conditions.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
We would like to meet new volunteers, to take advantage of their
individual skills, to exchange experiences and to give them the
opportunity to develop themselves. We want the volunteers to show us
different traditions, religions, customs, practices, histories,
architecture, art, language, kitchen, daily life etc. and in exchange
they will get to know the Polish culture. Together with the volunteers
we want to extend and develop the offer for the people who need help.
We want to give our volunteers the feeling that they are important and
needed for the people they take care of. Volunteers will have the
opportunity to learn from our experiences and wisdom They will help
children, youth, disabled and ill people. We are open for volunteers'
own ideas and initiatives while thinking of the way of organizing and
preparing their classes, meetings and work. We will appreciate if
volunteers have also theirs own ideas for organizing activities in any
part of the project. We would like to build this project together with
volunteers. Moreover we expect to expand our activities during the
volunteers visit.
The host organization guarantees the possibility to participate in
different activities named in the contract with the sending
organization.
The volunteers will help full time workers. They will work with competent staff.

The volunteer's tasks will be:
- to accompany children in their various activities
- to prepare theme workshops, interesting games

C.Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
The volunteers should be open-mined persons, who would like to meet new
people, countries and cultures. They should be interested in the work
with children, youth and disabled people. Volunteers should be
flexible, creative and communicative. It will be an advantage, if the
volunteers have experiences in national culture, social and youth work.
During the recruitment process we will cooperate with our co-ordinating
organization The "Windmill" Foundation. On the beginning the volunteers
will be put in contacts with the other volunteers (students and GPS
groups), other young people in our organization and will be encouraged
to join local cultural events. Volunteers will learn how to work in the
office, as well as what's the administration and personal structure in
our organization. During this time we want them to take part in
intensive polish language classes.
The volunteers will work 5 days a week (from Monday to Friday). The
Working day for the volunteer will be about 7-8 hours long.Weekends:
the volunteers normally have Saturdays and Sundays free for sightseeing
and taking part in cultural activities. Volunteers are free to spend
this time on their own wishes and preferences. All national and Church
holidays are supposed to be free for the volunteers. We would also like
to give them a free period which they can also use for travelling.
There will be exceptions when they are part of a team, organizing a
holiday trip or summer or winter camp for people with disabilities or
children and youth that has program activities over the weekend. In
this case the volunteers will get other days off to compensate. The
volunteers will have the opportunity to visit the main cities of
Poland.
We are open to cooperate with any sending organization.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
Volunteers will take part in the job training and Health and Safety
Course. We familiarise them with the Health and Safety at Work Act in
the place of accommodation, kitchen and workplaces. Every volunteer
will have a personal mentor and they will be in contact all the time.
In CCC "Windmill" safe living and working environment is guaranteed.
Safety and protection of staff and youth is the most important for us.
The competent staff is responsible for children, youth and disabled
people. A volunteer helps full-time worker but he/she doesn't bear
responsibility.
He/she will not stay alone with children or disabled people. We plan to
organize for volunteers a preparing to work in our organization.
