Development of sport related youth social work in Brandenburg, Germany, has 2 EVS free places
The focus is on street football. Street football is seen as a method whereby social rules can be developed through sports rules which should contribute to the development of fair play, tolerance and social skills in young people.
A.
Department social projects: about 14 employees + 4 to 5 FSJ (free social Year) volunteers + 1 or 2EVS volunteer.
The mobile "Street sport" project gives assistance to sporting clubs in
enlarging their offers for children and teenagers and in the execution
of their sport-events. By offering new and trendy sport-possibilities,
the project corresponds with the interests of children and especially
teenagers inside and outside of the sport-organisations.The project
'Kick' is a project of crime-prevention in a co-operation of sport, the
youth-helping-service and the police. Here, endangered children and
teenagers or those who have already incurred a penalty can get care and
advices if they want to. By integrating them in the sporting-clubs or
other spare time-offers, they are led to a sensible and regular spare
time-planning. Moreover, the concerned ones get individual help as well
as continuing advisory possibilities. The project '"Integration through
sports" describes a programme for the integration of "repatriates of
German ancestry". The essential aim is revealed when helping them to
get used to living here by sport activities, or when promoting the
living together with the local residents and helping to decrease
existing barriers. With the help of the sporting-clubs, the social and
linguistic integration is growing, especially during games and sport
activities. The project "Street soccer for tolerance"'.The aims of
"Street soccer for tolerance" are wide ranging and include engaging
young people and encouraging socially acceptable behaviour whilst
connection young people with the mainstream. The game will provide an
alternative for young people from life on the streets, drugs and
alcohol and will promote the development of interpersonal skills
including interaction, negotiation and compromise and encourage
equality between males and females. By using sport as the tool young
people can channel their energies into the game in a structured manner
promoting safety and health for young people and ultimately leading the
greater employability of young people.
Brandenburg is a rural area with a poor density of population, few big
cities and many communitis with less then 1000 inhabitants. In total
there are only 4 cities with about 100.000 inhabitants. Besides that
Brandenburg belongs to the states in Germany with the highest rates of
unemployement. The rate is about 20%. In the regions away from Berlin
and Potsdam the rate is clearly higher. Especially serious is the
unumployement umoungst young people. She is in sparsely populated areas
in the north partially 40%.
EVS-project area Sediner See is situated about 15 km south of Potsdam,
good connected by route, railway, airplane or boat, through the
contiguity of the metropole Berlin. EVS-project area 2: potsdam is the
capital of the Federal State Brandenburg und is situated as widely
ramified island in the middle of well wooded Havelsees-chain. In and
around Potsdam there are over 1.265 ha surfaces of water. Potsdam - has
the city flair. The culture and landscape is affected by its castles
and its Parks. The Havelsees offer aquatic athlets any possibility.
B.
Project area : Development of sport related youth social work in
Brandenburg. The focus is on street football. Street football is seen as
a method whereby social rules can be developed through sports rules
which should contribute to the development of fair play, tolerance and
social skills in young people. The method is seen as low level conflict
management in a playful manner. In the framework of the project citizen
involvement as well as the societal participation of young people,
especially disadvantaged youth and immigrants should be developed. The
project should contribute on a regional level to young people becoming
involved in regional youth work and networking the organisers of
different youth establishments. In the framework of the project Germany
wide street football tournaments will be developed and run. The
regional events present a highlight in the youth social work in the
respective communities or regions and serve the networking of youth
social work locally. Development of recreation offers for youth.
Involvment of youth in regional structures. Creating an open and
tolerant atmosphere by the development of international youth exchange.
Development of regional projects to increase the attraction of the
recreation offers.
Service and learning opportunities: Assistance with the organisation
and preparation of tournaments and events Assist reporting (Media,
documentation) Co-operation with local organisations, youth welfare
office, projects, youth clubs etc.. Networking Assist with the
organisation of events for young people (sport and play afternoons,
tournaments) Assist and support international youth exchanges in the EU
Get acquainted with sport structures. Development of ideas for
development of projects in their home town. Many options of formation
are possible: securities rules for wall climbing or for in-line
skating, baisc knowledge of conflict management, training to become
leader for youth vacations or to become youth lader. The volunteer
doesn't take over a regular job from the staff. He/she learns about the
project in general and can/may organise some projects(parts)
independently. The aim is that over the period of their service the
volunteer is able to organise a simular project independently in his
own country. The volunte accompany a mobile team. He/she prepares with
them all acivities. A big part of the activities are outdoor activities
in parks, city centres etc.. The volunteer helps with assembling the
courts/pitches, the organisation and as an observer. This gives the
possibility for the volunteer to have contact with other local young
people. 75% of their time the volunteers are on the road with their
team. Other preperations, team-meetings (preperation/reporting/new
ideas) take place in the office (25%).
C.
Profile of the volunteer: be interested in social youth work, be
interested in sport orientated social youth work be interested in the
conception and implementation of sport orientated events and projects
be interested to work wih children and young people dedicated
commitment and creativity implementing projects activity area: project
centre Neuseddin: dedicated commitment also in some weekends (Summer
season)
Selection procedure: all potential volunteers are asked to fill in the
same apllication form so that every volunteer can be assessed on the
same base and with equal chances. These forms are the base for an
assessment/selection in close co-operation with the host organisation.
Important is the motivation of the vounteer and how his estimated
abilities fit in the project and how the project can fulfill the
expectations of the volunteer. At the same time we try to involve young
people from different countries. It is also forseen that we offer
possibilities to young people with fewer opportunities.
Partner organisations: we do participate regularly and organise
ourselves contact making seminars in order to get acquainted with our
partners personally and with their projects. Good reliable partners are
a very important part for a succesfull voluntary service.
D.
Our social projects are an important part of our work. The aim of the
program "integration through Sports" is the integration of repatriates
of German ancestry. Herewith we contribute to our role in the socity to
help to reduce barriers of language. cultural reservations and crime
preventation The project "KICK" is a project for crime preventation in
co-operation with sport, youth help and the police. In this projects
young crime offenders or deliquents are individually coached or
adviced. The mobile street sport project (trend sports) and especially
street soccer for tolerance are orientated towards the needs and
intrests of young children and young people, especially those with
fewer opportunities.
Our social workers and street workers do have a pädagogik education in
order to be able to work with this young people, to set up projects:
They contribute to the social integration of foreign fellow citizen and
young people with special needs
In our educational centre "Blossin" and our sports facilities in Uckley
and Lindow we do have pädagogic educated employees and the necessary
infrastructur for young peole with special needs.
E.
The better the co-operation between the 3 EVS-partners, the enriching
the experience for everybody, especialy for young people with less
opportunities. Communication before, during and after their service
between sending and hosting organisation is very important. We will
only work with known reliable partner wen we work with young people
with fewer opportunities. Sending and hosting organisation should share
relevant information about the volunteer without labeling the volunteer
that he is disadvantiged. Additional background information about the
volunteer makes it possible for the mentor, to give the necessary
support and the tutor to adjust the activity to the capacity of the
volunteer. During his/her service the volunteer should have always the
ossibility to contact his confidant/person in support. For young people
under 18 we will clarify the basic rules to the staff and the young
person(s) as well as the consequences in case they are not obeyed. If
before the start expectations and rules are clear, then it is easier to
observe progress and difficulties. We do take care that staff and
volunteers do have the necessary competences and skills to insure the
security of the young people.
Because we also work with german volunteers (FSJ = free social year) we
will use the opportunity to create a peer situation between a german
volunteer and an european volunteer. The german volunteer could support
the european volunteer (supplementary to the instructor/mentor and the
tutor)
