Disadvantaged volunteer who needs personal assistant is invited to participate in EVS project, Czech Republic
Our educators will help and support a volunteer to join them during preparation and realisation activities running in our centre for people suffering psychiatric disease in combination with a kind of disability - mostly mental disability.
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community

activities, including the local community where the project will take

Local community
Our daily centre is situated in living part Kravi hora in Brno, which
is near to city centre (15 min by tram). This part is very quiet and
green. Our centre is run in a small rented space next to students'
dormitory - we have one big space where we work with our clients, and
six small offices for staff. Our centre is open every working day fro
8:30 to 15:30. The number of clients (aged 15 - 40, average age 20
years old) in our centre is varying from 10 to 20. Clients are coming
morning and leaves afternoon. There are 2 educators to run an everyday
program for clients and 4 administrative and technician support.
Brno
The Association FILIA is located in Brno. Brno is the second largest
city (389,000 inhabitants) in the Czech Republic, and is well-connected
to other cities in Central Europe. Brno is home to several universities
with many international students, and offers a variety of cultural
events throughout the year. It has several theatres and museums,
churches and a number of large shopping centres. Near our office we
have a pool, planetarium and catholic church.
Geographic information
Geographically, Brno is part of the Danube Basin and has many
historical ties to the Austrian capitol of Vienna which lies mere 110
km (68 miles) to the south.

Climate
Thanks to its location between the Bohemian-Moravian Hills and the
Southern Moravian lowlands, Brno enjoys a very pleasant, moderate
climate, ideal for recreation and everyday living.

B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers

examples of typical activities for the volunteers.
Long-term volunteer
Our educators will help and support a volunteer to join them during
preparation and realisation activities running in our centre for people
suffering psychiatric disease in combination with a kind of disability
- mostly mental disability. S/he will become familiar with many
pedagogical group activities, such as ceramics, Abilympics - Olympic
games for disabled people in working abilities, and visiting
exhibitions, museums. The volunteer will gain a broad perspective on
working with people with disability in the Czech Republic.
The volunteer will be included in the daily regular work with our
clients, in some occasional projects as well as in international
projects. We welcome if volunteer bring some new ideas - activities to
our organisation, if interested, we will support him/her to run own
workshops with the clients.
The volunteer will work Monday through Friday from 9 am until 3 pm.
Typical activities of the volunteer will include:
drawing and other creative activities with clients
physical exercising, swiming with clients
practicing reading and writing with clients
visiting museums with clients
occasional help with translating
The hosting organization will provide a three-month intensive Czech
language course at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University.
Short-term volunteer
We offer for short-term EVS volunteer to join our group where we make
flower arrangements. Together with our clients s/he will learn how to
make flower arrangements, bunch of flowers, how to work with dry
flowers and also how to make different decorations for flower
arrangements.
Short term project can last from 1 to 6 months according wish and
possibilities of EVS volunteer and the vacancy in the organisation.
EVS volunteer will learn Czech language individually and in a team with
disabled people, will increase his/her language ability using, to
cooperate with other people. Less experienced volunteer, moreover, will
get new working skills, will develop his/her creativity, will lead to
follow and keep regular working duties.
All duties and responsibilities will be adapted to abilities and possibilities of each volunteer.
Same conditions for long-term and short-term volunteer
The volunteer will stay in an international student dormitory of
Masaryk University. He or she will share the room (kitchen and
bathroom) with a student. The dormitory is located close to the
exhibition halls, for which Brno is famous for in the Central Europe.
Lunch during working days is in the organisation. Breakfast, dinner and
weekend food is arranged by volunteer and get money for.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
Please describe the profiles of volunteers you would like to receive in
your organisation. Include information on how you ensure an open and
transparent recruitment process as well as the overall accessibility of
EVS to all young people. Consider further information about the type of
sending organisation you want to cooperate with. This information can
help the match-making between volunteer candidates, sending
organisations and your organisation.
Long-term volunteer
The volunteer should be willing to work with disabled youth and adults
with psychiatric diagnoses combined with mental disability, willing to
learn Czech language, should be reliable. We welcome volunteers with
art hobby - such as singing, playing musical instruments, painting,
acting, dancing, etc.
Short-term volunteer
The volunteer should be willing to work alongside disabled people, to
work in a team, to follow instruction, to speak basic English.
D. Special needs (if applicable)
If your placements are open to hosting volunteers with fewer
opportunities, please provide information about the competence,
experience and infrastructure and (human or other) resources available
in your organisation to accommodate and support them.
We are also open to host youngsters with special needs. According our
possibility to arrange all additional facilities and support we will
make decision about possibility to accept disadvantaged youngsters in
our project after communication with potential volunteer and sending
organisation. Particular projects will be prepared after cooperation
with sending organisation.
If needed, the volunteer can bring his/her guide with. The need of
guide will be considered in cooperation with volunteer and the sending
organisation. In our organisation, there will be 24 hour virtual
support (on phone) for the volunteers on the projects and they will
have a dedicated mentor for him/her who will give them support after
working hours. During the work there is a staff / colleagues to help
and support the volunteer during the work.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
Please describe how you will guarantee a safe living and working
environment for the EVS volunteers, how you will prevent risks and
crises and how - in the case of EVS volunteers aged 16 or 17 - you
ensure appropriate supervision, child safety and protection.
In the beginning of the project the volunteer will be informed about
safety rules in our organisation as well as about safety rules in place
of living. During working, the volunteer will be with our staff, who is
respensible to check keeping the rules and solving problems. The
volunteer has a mentor who is responsible to help and support volunteer
during the whole lasting of the project.
