Eco-Museum Ringkoebing-Skjern from Denmark is looking for one EVS volunteer
Eco-Museum Ringkoebing-Skjern from Denmark is looking for one EVS volunteer
The key word of the museum is activity and absorption: You are not only visiting a museum but also biking, riding, sailing, smelling and tasting a museum.
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
The Rinkoebing inlet
The various divisions of Ringkoebing-Skjern Museum are placed along the
Ringkoebing inlet, which is an inlet of the North See. The wide sand
beaches of the area are some of the best beaches in Denmark.
Bundsbaek, where the administration, the school workshop, the hostel, a
small exhibition, the watermill and a café is placed, is located in a
plantation which used to be a heath but which is now made into a nature
park.
Bundsbæk is located about 40km north from Esbjerg, 40km south from Holstebro, about 25km from Ringkøbing and 10km from Skjern.
Ecological museum
The ecological museum contains 8-9 different museums and visiting
places which are connected by a 33 km long bike path that runs from the
north to the south of the inlet. On the way you will get the
opportunity to participate in activeties such as grinding corn, riding
on horseback and sailing in viking ships.
Living museum
In the summer period the iron age village is inhabited by families and
volunteers who would like to spend their holidays in a different way.
At the viking harbour, and in many of the other divisions you will find
operating workshops as well.
Contact point
AFS Interkultur is member of the world-wide youth organisation,
American Field Service, which has offices in 55 countries. AFS
programmes include 12-months high school stay for pupils between 15 to
18 years of age, and 5-12 months youth exchange for people from 18 to
25 years of age.
Today AFS is an independent youth organisation with a strong
international network (AFS Intercultural Programs). AFS is a voluntary
based, non-profit organisation independent of political and religious
interest. In Denmark AFS started in 1947 and has today 43 local
chapters.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
The volunteer will get the opportunity to participate in all the
different activities of the museum. Typical activities could be:
- Participating in the activities of the Iron Age Village
- Assisting in the workshops by showing visitors how to use the various
tools and implements for the handcrafts, baking, ironing etc.
- Working in the café
- Assisting with the archeological digging
- Assisting with guided nature walks
- Translating prospects into his/her own language
- Establishing nature paths and campsites
The volunteer will have the opportunity to participate in our courses
and learn how to handle the old traditional handcrafts. The volunteer
can also participate in our nature walks, where he/she will learn about
the nature around Ringkoebing inlet.
We hope that a volunteer of another cultural background will bring a
new outlook to the museum and ask questions and in that way help us to
see our activities from another perspectives.
We are very open to any new ideas for visitor activities that the volunteer might have.
A typical working day will be from 11-17, and the volunteer will also
do occasional work at weekends. However, the working week will not
exceed 35 hours per week.
Host family
AFS will provide a host family for the volunteer. The life in a host
family will facilitate the integration in the local community and will
accelerate the process of both language and intercultural learning.
The volunteer will be invited to social events arranged by the AFS's
local chapters together with other volunteers, exchange students and
host families.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
We expect the volunteer to be flexible and willing to try different
kinds of work. The volunteer must be openminded, curious and interested
in learning more about nature and history.
The volunteer must like to spend time outdoors, as many of our activities are outdoor activities.
The vounteer must be able to speak English at a conversational level.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
The museum complies with Danish safety regulations. The work at the museum does not involve any special risks.
