EVS for Conservation and development of the natural landscape
EVS for Conservation and development of the natural landscape
The main activities will be done in the project "Manual activities concerning the conservation and development of the natural landscape". This work will be done in a group of young people. The tasks are different depending on the season. In summer there is e. g. helping to cut the grassland, repairing fences, … in summer and autumn there is gathering apples to make natural apple juice, in autumn and winter there is to eliminate bushy trees out of the moors, in spring there is to work at the fruit-trees and preparing the grassland. All the year long there is helping at the herd of sheep. The volunteer has to be conscious, that this work is carried out outside in the landscape and it is physically strenuous.
The city of Tecklenburg is conveniently accessible at the motorway A1
between the cities of Osnabrück and Münster and the motorway A30
Hannover and Hengelo (Netherlands). The international airport
Münster/Osnabrück is at a distance of about 15 km.
The city of Tecklenburg with its four villages (Brochterbeck, Leeden,
Leede and Tecklenburg itself) has about 10,000 inhabitants. Tecklenburg
is a small city with the character of a village. Beside the ridge of
hills of the Teutoburg Forest some parts of the city are situated in the
flat park area of the Münsterland. The centre for the protection of
nature (the sawmill of House Marck) is situated at the foot of the
castle hill of Tecklenburg. The buildings belong to the water castle of
House Marck which was built in the 14th century. Due to its placement
Tecklenburg is a favourite place especially for tourists.
The nearest largest cities are Münster and Osnabrück (each at a distance of about 30 km).
The tasks for the volunteer can and may be very different and depend on
her/his specific skills. Normally the volunteer gets an first general
view of the activities and then we decide together what she or he will
do. Nearly most of the time the volunteer will work together with other
people.
Some tasks can be done in our project "Environment Education". The
volunteer can help to organize and carry out periodically meeting groups
of children and young people for environment activities and environment
education. This can be done one afternoon in the week and in summer we
realize a nature camp for ten days for about 30 children at the age from
9 to 12 years.
There are also some caretaker tasks at our ANTL Centre.
The possibility to work in our project "Public Relations" depends on the
specific skills and the knowledge of the German language of the
volunteer. E. g. if the volunteer is good in taking photos maybe she or
he can help to report our activities.
The volunteer shall take part at our public excursions and public
information meetings about nature and environmental themes. This
activities will be distributed over the year and take part also on
weekends.
In the beginning there will be a language course . The timetable depends on the opportunities.
An example for the timetable of a normal week:
- normally 3 days working in the landscape ( 7.00 am - 15.45 pm )
- Friday afternoon meeting with children groups
- language course (maybe in the evening)
- some times there will be work at the weekend
- the volunteer can work more during one week (or some weeks), so that in other weeks he can do less.
The basic is the manual work in the landscape. Further there are many
possibilities and choices. They depend on the personal interests an
specific skills of the volunteer. This will change during the stay with
respect to the season and the increase of personal competence.
The volunteer should have interest in themes of nature and environment.
She or he should like do physical work outside in the nature. Personal
endurance and a living interest facilitates the work in project and to
feel at home in the association. The volunteer will find a complex
working and by reason of the great part of honorary working persons also
complex structured organisation. So it is important that she or he is
personally independent and an open minded person who can communicate,
who is able to take initiative and to cooperate with others.
Volunteers who have interest to participate at our work shall send us
her or his letter of application. If there rests any question or the
volunteer or we need further information, we will contact each other. If
the volunteer and the ANTL decide to work together and there is place
for a volunteer in the chosen period we will welcome every applicant to
come to us.
The supporting organization provides an appropriate accommodation possibility for the volunteers. In Westerkappeln there live volunteers in a group house for volunteers with an own bedroom and a common day-room and a common kitchen. Between the mentor and the volunteer there take place exchange discussions regularly in order to accompany any progress and to find solutions to any problems. There are an introduction and an intermediate discussion with the volunteer, with mentor and the supporting organization as well as meetings of mentors, at which the mentors can exchange among themselves. The Youth Office has developed quality conditions, which contain an introduction and an intermediate discussion as well as contain a questionnaire, which is filled out at the beginning of the project by the mentor and the volunteer.
