There are about 3000 young people who are involved in above mentioned
interest groups and clubs. The age group is starting from three months
old babies who are coming to the baby school and ending with 25 year
olds who are still participating in various interest groups or clubs.
With the beginning of school year (1st September) also our interest
groups start working and also there are some which are working
throughout the summer, but usually during summer time all the
activities and work is organised in the camp "Ledini" not far from our
town.
Jelgava is a town located about 40 km far from Riga, the capital of
Latvia. It has been an industrious town, but now one of the most actual
problems is unemployment. There are about 70 thousand inhabitants in
Jelgava from which about 60 % are Latvian speaking. There is a large
river near the castle which has been made into the University of
Agriculture, which means that in our town is a great number of
university aged people. It is a town with many parks and also one of
our centre's buildings is located in a park where young people like to
gather.
We partricipating in EVS during 3 years, and want to continue to do it
in future too. Of course we have more experience now and see, that 2
volunteers for our organization not enough, becourse our center's kids
like volunteers and with plesure learn cultural traditions from them,
specialy we need volunteers in summer to help in work in summer camp.
In this reason we have motivation to continue to host more volunteers.
Of course, as we are a very open organization the aim of hosting an EVS
in our organization is to differentiate our daily life by a foreigner,
who has a different culture, and not only to whom we could teach
something, but also who could teach something to us. We have quite well
developed local volunteering programme, and we think , that
international volunteers would do the same tasks as our local
volunteers too. As mainly the volunteer activities are connected with
children, the volunteers could give the impression for the children
about different cultures. In this reason we try to chose volunteers
from diferent countries. As we are planning to be a sending
organization in the future then hosting a volunteer would be one of the
ways how to popularize EVS as such. At the same time, we hope that we
could develop some future projects with the sending organization.
The project is a short term project for 3 months (1 of June - 31 of August) and the volunteers should be from diferent
countries. Volunteers work would be to help teachers with workshops for
kids in the summer camp from 9.00- 12.00, and in afternoons to help to
organize activities (to teach their national dances or games - anything
would be up to volunteers creativity) for kids. The camp is day camp
for kids (6-14 years old) from Monday till Friday from 9.00 - 18.00, in
Thusday we have night activities with sleeping in tents, swimming pool
(in the camp), disco and fire with songs singing and another night
activities for kids.
There are no special recruitment criteria for the possible volunteer if
talking about the age or gender. The volunteer has to be active, loving
children, be brimful of ideas, which he/she could also realise.
Linguistic skills - basic English or Russian would be appreciated for
quicker integration in the project.
Our project involves volunteers with less opportunities.
It is possible to host a volunteer with less oppportunities (such as
from less-privileged region, but unfortunately, not with disabilities).
Our organisation has developed some local programmes exactly for
children from disadvantegous families and every year we are organising
summer camps, where also those children take part.
