EVS leisure time activities project in Czech Republic
EVS leisure time activities project in Czech Republic
The aim of the participation in EVS is to create an international climate in our organisation which we could offer to the local community, especially to the local young people.
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
Klub studentu, rodicu a pratel CMG (the Club of the Students, their
Parents and Friends of the Grammar School of Sts. Cyril and Method) is
a non-profit organisation. His aim is a support of leisure time
activities of local young people. There are two main projects of the
organisation: the Youth Information Centre (YIC) and the Oaza Youth
Club. Both, YIC and Oaza Club, work generally with children and young
people, who are not organized in any other leisure time activities
centres (mostly students of CMG who are often from many members
families).
The town of Prostejov is a former district town with population of
about 50 000 people and it is part of the Olomouc Region. The town has
a favourable geographical location - it is situated in the middle of
Morava, on the motorway between Brno and Olomouc, about 60 kilometres
from Brno, the second biggest town of the Czech Republic. The ancient
town of Olomouc lies in the heart of the so-called Haná region,
nowadays it is the fifth largest city in the Czech Republic and the
seat of the Olomouc Region. It has the second most significant
collection of historical monuments in the country after Prague. In
Prostejov, there is a long lasting tradition of clothing industry,
which unfortunately stagnates today. But today, Prostejov is also known
as the special military forces baseline. Right in the town, people can
visit the theatre, culture clubs, swimming pool and sport studios.
There are conditions for recreation, e.g. tennis. Thanks to easy
availability it is possible to use cultural and sports opportunities of
nearby cities (Olomouc and Brno).
The local community is helpful and kind. Young people are also equiped
with language knowledge, but only few of them are not afraid to use the
foreign language. And the speaking abilities of senior citizens is
weaker yet. Generally, facilities for foreigners are not very good in
Prostejov, but (and it is the advantage of nearby cities) facilities
for foreigners are at the good level in Olomouc and in Brno. On the
other side, in Prostejov, there is an important Gipsy minority and also
a Vietnam minority and they have an influence on the whole atmosfere of
the town too. Our organisation is situated in the building of the
church school, so it also has influence on the community, which the
volunteer is in touch with. And our organisation is intent on children
and youth, who are not organized in any other leisure time activities
centres. So there are two cathegories of visitors of YIC and Oaza Club:
those, who are regulant clients of concrete activities, and then those,
who come for the first time and (or) only by a single application –
there can be more difficulties with cooperation and communication with
the latter group.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
The aim of the participation in EVS is to create an international
climate in our organisation which we could offer to the local
community, especially to the local young people. We would like to
create an environment where the youth can meet, communicate and
cooperate with foreigners and where they can think and break down
barriers, not only language but also cultural, social etc. EVS is one
of possibilities to develop our organisation, each volunteer brigs us a
new perspective for our activities and gives new impulses.
In our project, there is also a lot of possibilities of a personal
development of volunteers. They will have possibilities to actively
participate in our regular activities and they will have also
possibilities of creating their own activity or a project – they can
learn how to express their ideas, emotions and experiences. They will
have occasions to learn how to manage their time in our project and
their free time too. Volunteers who will participate in activities of
the Youth Information Centre, they will have also a lot of
possibilities of learning how to use computers, how to look for
information, present and exchange information, how to communicate and
participate in collaborative networks via Internet etc. They can also
learn how to work with youth in a wide range of age (especially at the
age of 12 – 25 years) who are not organized in any leisure time
activities centres.
For applicants for EVS, there are two possible profiles in our
organisation, which can be combined. The first profile accents the
Youth Information Centre. A volunteer will participate in computer
courses, in looking for actual information (about education, jobs,
travelling, projects etc.), take a share in regular and special
activities of YIC (for example competitions), and administer websites
of YIC and Eurodesk and so on. The second profile accents the Oaza
Youth Club. A volunteer will be involved in leisure time activities for
children and youth in Oaza, for example sports, drama workshops,
creative workshops, programs for holidays etc. and help with organizing
weekend activities and courses of personal development, e.g. “The
Movement of the Animators” (a systematic training for instructors and
group leaders of the children summer camps). These two profiles can be
also interconnected. We will enable each volunteer to choose from
activities which we offer, according to their capabilities, interests
and hobbies. We are also open to a personal initiative of volunteers
and we welcome it. Volunteers can start with a new activity, prepare
one-time activity, create a larger holiday project for youth or help us
to participate in Youth Exchange projects and by these activities
enrich our common proposal. Visitors of YIC and Oaza Club are also
interested in discussions in foreign languages, in the culture and the
native countries of volunteers.
For example, these activities belong to a range of regular activities
of our organisation: computer courses (PHP) for youth at the age of 14
– 17 years, competition called “Adventure with a computer” for children
at the age of 8 – 10 years, presentations on public (e.g. Day of EU),
chats for students (at the age of 15 – 20 years) about EVS.
Accommodation for volunteers: A flat for 2 volunteers in the building of one-family house, which is inhabited - each of
volunteers has her/his own room with detached doorway and lockable.
Then there is a collective eating nook and a bathroom. The house is
only 20 minutes walking from our organisation.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
Volunteer’s profile: helpful to children and young people, get involved
in the offered activities, able to find her/his own activities,
communicative and firm to solve possible conflicts.
Recruitment process: We reply to each applicant and then we choose the volunteer on the basis of her/his interests and
hobbies. Especially, the concrete ideas of applicants (what they want
to do in our organisation and what they want to learn in our
organisation) are for us important.
D. Special needs (if applicable)
Our organisation is prepared to give to volunteers with fewer
opportunities more attention to their possible difficulties, as is for
example ignorance of local specifics, different social and cultural
experience.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
Working environment: The premises of YIC and Club Oaza are informal. We seek to make friendly atmosphere in our
organisation not only for our visitors, but also for our workers and volunteers. Workers and volunteers keep also at their
disposal a cabinet, where they can leave their coat, prepare tea or
coffee etc. Volunteers are in contact with their mentor each week (if
the volunteer is interested in more frequentant contact with her/his
mentor, it would be of course possible) and they regularly discuss
their activities and also problems with the Head of YIC and Club Oaza.
All our workers increase their own competences to work with volunteers
by various courses.
Risk prevention: After arrival volunteers will pass the safety
training, they will get acquainted with basic situations, including
risk situations, which can happen at home, at their leisure time and of
course in the workplace. They will also get acquainted with emergency
calls, timetables of the urban mass transportation, maps of
neighbourhood etc.
