EVS opportunities for 3 youth in a elderly people care project from Italy
The activities will be carried out in a Home for Elderly People located in a small village called Vestone.
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
" Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary
activities, including the local community where the project will take
place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment).
" If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please
include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer.
The Foundation Angelo Passerini is in Nozza di Vestone, a village in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy.
Nozza is 50 kilometres away from Brescia, 25 kilometres from Salò on
Garda Lake, 6 kilometres from Idro and 60 kilometres from the winter
resort of Madonna di Campiglio. It is in Vallesabbia, a land which is
rich in history and culture.
Vestone, which is in the Alta Valsabbia, has a community of 3500
inhabitants: its economy is mainly industrial with two big engeneering
industries and a myriad of artisan firms. In addition to this, there
are a theatre, a cinema, two youth clubs, a gym and various voluntary
associations (members of the Italian Alpine Groups, ambulance and
firefighters, etc.).
The nearest airports are in Montichiari (Brescia), Verona and Orio al
Serio (Milano/Bergamo), while the nearest train stations are in Brescia
and Desenzano. The village is far away from important centres but it is
not isolated insofar as it can be reached through two main roads that
get directly from Brescia and Desenzano. Vestone is connected to the
town of Brescia, Idro and Garda Lake through a service that supplies
buses every hour from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m..

B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
" Describe what you can offer to volunteers in terms of service and learning opportunities.
" Please, explain what will be the role of EVS volunteers in the host organisation.
" Describe the activities in which the volunteers could be involved and
the activities the volunteers could create in your organisation. Give
examples of typical activities for the volunteers.
The project plans the involvement of European volunteers in the
organization, helping operators (educators and entertainers) in
carrying out the educative and entertainment activities.
The volunteers will be a support in the realization of projects which
are thought by the educators and the entertainers' coordinator in order
to improve motor, cognitive and visual abilities of elderly people and
children. In addition to this, the volunteers can talk to them
increasing their cultural knowledge.
In the filed of the activities with elderly people, therefore, the
volunteer has the possibility to learn the rehabilitative methods
concerning entertainment, as the Rot therapy, the "validation" therapy,
the music therapy and the pet therapy. Furthermore, the volunteer will
acquire the capacity to approach to disadvantaged people and to
colleagues.
Through the activities with childhood we plan the involvement of
international volunteers in our kindergarten through their support to
the operators (as educator and pediatrician). The volunteer will be an
important help in the realization of the projects for kids, which will
be organized by the educators and the person in charge of the
kindergarten (projects adressed to the motory, tactile, visual and
auditory abilities of the kids). The volunteers will interact with the
children increasing their own cultural experience and that of kids and
operators.
In the next table we list some of the capacities that the volunteers aquire during the project:
DIAGNOSTIC CAPACITIES RELATIONAL ABILITIES PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Understanding the needs of the kids Working in equip Taking care of the kids
Understanding and interpreting parents' requirements Behaving
positively within the group Arranging and organizing recreational and
motor activities
Evaluating the effectiveness of the performed activities Involving the
kids in various entertainment activities Performing education and
rehabilitation projects
Observing kids' behaviours Stimulating and encouraging the involvement in the group Using entertainment techniques
Knowing the different phases of development and evolution of the kids
Managing the group Encouraging the autonomy level of the kids
In our structure most of staff is younger than 35 years old, so the
volunteers will be integrated in a youthful, comfortable and dynamic
environment. They will have a contact with educators and entertainers
who are professionals already working in a social context with the
European volunteers of the previous project.
The intercultural dimension is essential in the decision to host foreign volunteers. Our main objectives are:
- let the volunteers know the Italian culture and let them develop an
attitude of helpfulness and openness towards different habits,
traditions and customs;
- contributing to overcome stereotypes and prejudices in the young foreign volunteers and in the local community;
- creating an occasion of generational and intercultural exchange among volunteers and elderly people/children.
The volunteers will dedicate most of their time to entertainment
activities with the opportunity to improve them with new proposals,
ideas and suggestions according to their abilities, motivations and
background. We are convinced that the volunteers, being able to test
their strength in such an experience as the European Voluntary Service,
are young people full of resources, gifted with personal initiative and
creativity. Their presence and their help will represent for us an
important support in the realization of our activities and in the
improvement of the quality of life of our guests.
ACTIVITIES WITH ELDERLY PEOPLE
The main activities in our organization are:
- collaborating with the entertainment staff during outdoor and indoor activities:
reading and commenting on short stories taken from books and
newspapers, games whose aim is stimulation and reasoning, one-to-one
entertainment through dialogue, caresses and smiles; help in the
orientation to reality, sensorial stimulation, activities for
encouraging relations among elderly people, among guests and the whole
organization; work activities in groups with the support of multimedia
instruments, as well.
- supporting the staff during the moments of surveillance or during the main meals of the guests.
ENTERTAINMENT ACTIVITIES WHICH ARE ORGANISED IN THE ORGANIZATION
The activities are organized as follows:
" Stimulation of memory and attention through:
- repetition training, recognition or completion of lists of words, couples of words, numbers
- calculations
- sequences of events to reorder according to a logical connection
- reading and comment on short stories taken from book and newspapers
- puzzle solving
- linguistic games
- vision and comment on a movie
- exercises aimed at helping the elderly remembering their past lives.
- group of reminiscence in which elderly people live again their life
stimulated and helped by the information collected in the personal
dossier or by personal objects.
" Therapy of orientation to reality through the information about year,
month, day, time, place that are provided to elderly people through the
calendar at the beginning and during the day usually before the reading
of a newspaper.
" Discussion group and the reworking of past experiences with a special attention to the enhancement of the emotive.
" Work therapy consists in creating objects related to an event or a
project arranged with elderly people (for example: the restoration of
objects with the decoupage technique, knitting or works with the
salty/maize dough).
" Socialization activities: parties, songs, dances, group exercises, bingo and quizzes.
Entertainment activities organised outside the structure or with external collaborations:
- Excursions, sea stays, outings to the market or to the mall,
- Visits to parents, friends or other structures,
- Organisation of cultural and recreational events in which the elderly people are protagonists or audience,
- Participation to events organised by the community or other institutions
The volunteers will have to follow the instructions given by the person
in charge of the project in order to carry out their duty and to take
care of elderly people at their best. In addition to this, they will
have to be in possession of a medical certificate.
The entertainers' coordinator will decide with the volunteers the
concretization of a project and, during the equipe meeting, it is
offered to them the possibility to express their opinions on their own
and on others' projects. Taking part in the monthly equipe meetings the
volunteers will have the opportunity to deal with qualified staff to
acquire specific skills and above all, to mature a professional
experience. This could represent a stimulus for young people who want
to go on working in the social sector making use of the EVS experience.
Some of them stay in our structure at the end of the EVS experience for
some months with a regular salary in order to strengthen the skills
they have acquired and to experiment themselves professionally, as
well.
The volunteers will have the opportunity to create their own project
with people suffering from Alzheimer (supporting them for example
during the session of music-theraphy or art-theraphy) and with other
elderly people (suggesting creative activities as manual works, music
that could stimulate the cognitive functions and memory).
The Rest Home for Elderly People is always open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The day in the Home for Elderly People is organized in two shifts, as follows.
Morning shift:
- 7:30 assistance for the breakfast helping elderly people;

- 19:30-20.00 assistance (when some elderly are brought to bedrooms, some others remain in the living room and need company).
Except for the support during meals, volunteers won't be required to provide other assistance activities.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
Please describe the profiles of volunteers you would like to receive in
your organisation. Include information on how you ensure an open and
transparent recruitment process as well as the overall accessibility of
EVS to all young people. Consider further information about the type of
sending organisation you want to cooperate with. This information can
help the match-making between volunteer candidates, sending
organisations and your organisation.
The volunteers should be mature and possess an attitude to work with
elderly people(sometimes suffering from dementia) and children. They
should show flexibility and responsibility with the desire to test
their strength. In addition to this, they should be open to dialogue
and to the exchange of ideas. This is the key for the mentor to help
the volunteers live happily their EVS experience.
Methods of recruitment
During the evaluation of applications, we will take into consideration
the profiles that better cling on the criteria indicated above.
In the process of selection of the volunteers, the greatest
transparency will be guaranteed with no discrimination concerning
origin, social status or linguistic competences.
D. Special needs (if applicable)
If your placements are open to hosting volunteers with fewer
opportunities, please provide information about the competence,
experience and infrastructure and (human or other) resources available
in your organisation to accommodate and support them.
In our organization a well-qualified staff works. It consists of
doctors, a psychologist and a social assistant. The mentor will be
constantly present and will support volunteers everyday. For this
reason, we think to have all the instruments to offer valuable support
to volunteer with fewer opporunities, as well.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
Please describe how you will guarantee a safe living and working
environment for the EVS volunteers, how you will prevent risks and
crises and how - in the case of EVS volunteers aged 16 or 17 - you
ensure appropriate supervision, child safety and protection.
Volunteers who work in our organization are constantly supported by the
staff. All of them must conform to the safety rules provided for by the
internal "Prevention and Protection Plan".
Volunteers will be supplied with all the necessary instruments, such as
clothes and tools to work in total security. Furthermore, European
volunteers could daily relay on the supersion of the mentor and the
director of the organization.
In situations of crisis we count on the support of the coordinating
organization (Tempo Libero Soc. Coop. Sociale ONLUS) which provides
support both to volunteers and tutors.
During the on-arrival training for volunteers organized by Tempo Libero
a session is specifically dedicated to the methodologies of management
of situations of crisis.
