EVS opportunity at Youth Center ATOLL from Austria
EVS opportunity at Youth Center ATOLL from Austria
The aim of the evs project is to increase the activities for young people, to bring in an "intercultural dimension" to our daily work, to broaden the horizon of the team and the visitors and to support our clients on their way to become adults.
Philosophy and regualr activities:
Our philosophy is to support young people to become without to many problems contended adults.
We are a youth centre in the city of Amstetten in Lower Austria.
Our organization is a part of the local government. The local
government is financing our youth centre. We are a non profit
organization.
Our opening hours are Sunday to Thursday from 2 until 8 pm and Fridays
and Saturdays from 2 until 9 pm. These hours are our main working
hours. Within these hours we offer different activities for young
people to spend their leisure time (games, internet, music, video,
skate park, basketball, etc.). Quite often we organize different
workshops for example DJ workshops which take place in beside the
opening hours.
We also provide information on several topics, like parents, law,
sexuality, drugs, school, etc. and we are a counselling centre for
young people. In case we can accompany our clients to different
authorities.
Overall it is a "meeting point" for young people aged between 10 and 23 years.
Another part of our work is the organization of bigger events outside
the youth centre. For instance we arrange a bandcontest with 13
newcomerbands and more than 400 visitors every autumn.
All our services are for free.
Once a week the team meets to exchange ideas and arrange new things.
Community:
Our youth center is situated in the city of Amstetten in Lower Austria.
(about 70 kilometers from St. Pölten, the capital of Lower Austria and
150 kilometers west from Vienna).
Amstetten has a population of 23.000 people and a lot of schools that
are visited by young people from the region. There also a lot of shops,
museums and administrative authorities.
The city is situated in the flatter part of Austria even though you
don´t have to go to far enjoy the mountains. Also you don´t have to go
to far be on the countryside. For example the river Danube is only
about 10 kilometers away. The public transport system is very good. You
have got the railway right in beside the youth centre.
The youth centre A-Toll had a lot of experiences in the youth programme
(hosting evs volunteers during the last 3 years). We are a really
motivated hosting organisation. At the moment we host a greek evs
volunteer.
We also think the youth programme is very important for young people,
so we want to become the possibility to host more other evs volunteers.
Our activities are:
" Providing information
" Giving advice to young people on serverl topics
" Organizing different activities (games, internet, music, video, skate
park, basketball, workshops, arts,…) and events like bandcontests and
dj contest,…
Entertainment is another activity of our daily work, which means for
example to play tabeltennis, to play cards, crack a joke, have a good
talk,… This activities are very important to get in contact with the
youngsters and to build a confident relation.
Moreover our Motivation to host european volunteers in our organisation again achieve the following aims: (European level)
" Young people should develop a common understanding with other countries
" The youngsters should have an ideal on what the European integration goes through and perceives
" Our target group should learn to understand that they are EU citizens and so an active part of the European Union
" Young people should learn more about the Europan Union and about their possibilities
In the last years we had the possibilites to collect a lot of important and fantastic experiences with our europen volunteers.
Volunteers tasks:
We would like the volunteer to participate in our daily work with young people.
She/ he will be present 4 to 5 days a week in our youth centre to talk
with our youngsters/ visitors, to carry out different activities with
them and to give them information. The volunteer can hear a lot
problems of our visitors (with their families, schoolproblems, jobs,…),
because she/ he will be in nearly daily contact with them and maybe
help us in giving advice or work on these problems. Mostly the young
people in our centre just need someone to talk to, someone who is
listening to their problems.
So the volunteer will have some different tasks:
" Talk and support the youngsters
" Inform youngsters about different kind of topics
" Collect information, provide information on several topics (like school, leisure time,..)
" Beeing available for questions and problems
" Help the team of the youth center to arrange some different kinds of activities (like games, music, arts,….)
" Support the staff by planing and organizing some events like bandcontests,..
" Support the team by their daily work
Moreover she/ he should help in the office work and participate in our
team meetings which take place once a week, where we discuss and
reflect our work, collect new ideas,….
Percentage of time given to each task:
50% Work with young people in the youth centre
35% Organizing events and activities
15% Office work (like answering e-mails, administrative work) and team meetings
A typical day could be like this:
1 pm - 2 pm Prepartion for activities, workshops, office work

them, helping with problems, giving information and advice, playing
games or doing sport with the youngsters,…)
7 pm - 8 pm Office work (reflection of the day and preparation for the next day)
Working days/ Hours:
The youth centre is opend 7 days a week (does not mean that our
volunteer has to work 7 days a week). Actually our volunteer will have
to work 4 to 5 days a week sometime at the weekends as well. For the
volunteer he working hours will be 30 per week usually Sunday to
Thursday form 1 pm to 8 pm and Friday and Saturday from 2 pm to 9 pm
Once a week we have our team meetings in the morning (so we start
earlier)
Holidays:
The volunteer has 24 days (in 12 months) on his/her disposal. We will
arrange the holiday periods according to the volunteer´s desires and
the possibilties in the youth centre.
