EVS opportunity involvement in German Gymnasium activities
The working place for the volunteer is the school library.
With more than 51.000 inhabitants Ibbenbüren is the second-biggest city in the Steinfurt district, the centre of the Tecklenburg Country. Its charming situation in the northern Münsterland, directly at the Teutoburg Forest underlines the charm of Ibbenbüren. The city is shaped by the mineral coal mining industry and by middle-class craft. Ibbenbüren has a great number of leisure time possibili-ties: (Swimming pool with artificial waves, summer sled railroad, Aasee, sails, submerge water world etc.). To the university city Münster (265.000 inhabitants) there are direct bus connections.
The volunteer is merged into the teachers` stuff and is cared for by a
mentor. During the entire du-ration of the Voluntary Service there take
place regular meetings. The volunteer will receive support from the
teachers and the pupil agency, in order to get integrated into the
project, into the country and into the culture. The volunteer is also
promoted to bring own ideas, creativity and experiences to the
development of the project. The working place for the volunteer is the
school library, which offers a wonderful view of the city and the
Teutoburg Forest. The library is a communication centre of the school.
Here work pupils, teachers and parents together on school questions and
in addition on special interests of the local community. The volunteer
has the two following major tasks:
a) Library: The volunteer has the task to care for the modern, well
equipped school- library. Here are used different media, which are used
by the pupils and teachers (Internet, books, plays, CD's, car-tridges).
Together with a team the volunteer works at a new system of the marking
and check-out counter of approx. 20,000 books. The volunteer has beyond
that the task to inform new pupils about the lending possibilities and
conditions and to give advices as well as to help all pupils and
interested people. At an information-desk they are at disposal for
inquiries to all pupils.

and to find necessary and important information in a simple way.

The volunteer should be in particular communicative and not afraid of
learning new people. It would be good if she/ he had already
experiences in the work with children and young people. Creativity and
ideas as well as a particular initiative are needed. The volunteer
should know at least how to surf in the internet and how to provide
email access etc. Professional or specialised knowledge is not
necessary .However, the volunteer should like books. The volunteer
should work in a team as well as on their own.
We cooperate with every sending-organization. Organizations, which do similar activities would be useful.
The supporting organization provides an appropriate accommodation
possibility for the volunteer. According to the place of the project,
the volunteer will live in Ibbenbüren or Westerkappeln in a dwelling,
which many volunteers are sharing or in the accommodation of the
clinical center Ibbenbüren. Here the volunteer has its own room,
kitchen and a bath are common rooms, which are available for several
persons.
Between the tutor and the volunteer periodically conversations will
take place in order to accompany progress and to help the volunteer
with the solution of probably arising problems. Additionally the tutor
guarantees the receive of continual support for the volunteer.
For the first time in the project a training plan will be arranged.
Volunteers receive each necessary support for the realization of their
tasks and enough time to get into the new job.
The training plan will help in the integration in the local district and the project surrounding field.
The supporting organization ensures that the volunteer participates in
the on-arrival-training and the mid-term-meeting. EVS- volunteers
receives an appropriate language training during their stay, which is
organized by the supporting organization.
Co-workers of the supporting organization look after the volunteer and
will take care. They are also organizing meetings, which take place
every 4-6 weeks, where all volunteers of the region meet each other. In
special meetings they become acquainted intensively with the German
culture. In the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the EVS a
conversation between the volunteer, the tutor and the supporting
organization takes place and there are special meetings only for the
tutors, where they can exchange their experiences. The
youth-welfare-office has developed some quality-standards, which
includes the on-arrival-conversation and the mid-term-conversation and
also a questionnaire, which is to be filled by the tutor and the
volunteer in the beginning of the EVS.
