EVS volunteer opportunity in public garden on a Danish island

EVS volunteer opportunity in public garden on a Danish island

The Endelave Lægeurtehave consists of a garden for guided tours, a café selling primarily our own ecological products and a shop also selling primarily our own products.

Project environment:

Endelave is a small island situated in Kattegat off Horsens Fjord, scarcely 10 kilometres from the mainland. The island covers 13.2 sq km, 1/3 being forest, heathland and common, the rest cultivated. There are approx. 175 permanent residents. Most of the buildings are in and around the village of Endelave whilst houses and farms are thinly spread elsewhere. However, there is also a large summer house area near Lynger Hage on the southeast coast.

Endelave can be visited all the year round, and provides a wealth of beautiful walks and cycle tours in varied and unspoiled nature. The quality of the water round the island is very high.

Endelave By is an unusually large and beautiful village that has preserved its old village atmosphere intact. Many of the old timberframed farms and houses, including the old school from 1828, are still there, especially around the village pond at the western end, where the original village of Endelave lay. The church dates back to the 15th century, but has been rebuilt several times since - most recently in 1931, when the tower was added. The village still houses shops and services to meet the islanders' day-to-day needs - a grocer, baker, post office, school, library, and an inn.

Endelave's nature is remarkable, and contains a multitude of different kinds of natural environment. The central part of the island is arable land, whilst about a third consists of uncultivated and relatively undisturbed nature. In addition to about 400 acres of protected nature sanctuary near Øvre, there is another large nature area near Lynger Hage in the south, with heather and mixed stands of pine, oak, birch, and rowan. The largest deciduous forest on the island is around the Louisenlund estate, where remains of the century-old estate forest are still preserved.

The Endelave ferry sails between Snaptun on the mainland and Endelave By. The crossing time is 55 mins.On Tuesdays the ferry also sails to/from Horsens.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers:

The Endelave Lægeurtehave consists of a garden for guided tours, a café selling primarily our own ecological products and a shop also selling primarily our own products.

The volunteer will get the opportunity to participate in all the different activities of the association i. e. taking part in the daily work in the garden, the café and the shop. In highseason in July/August the work will mainly be in the café with tasks like waiting on tables, clearing tables and cleaning. The rest of the time the volunteer will participate in the work around the garden. Typical activities could be harvest and drying of plants, weeding etc.

The work in and around the garden will give the volunteer an excellent opportunity to get an insight in the ecological growing and the history of medical plants

Host family

AFS will provide a host family for the volunteer. The life in a host family will facilitate the integration in the local community and will accelerate the process of both language and intercultural learning.

The volunteer will be invited to social events arranged by the AFS's local chapters together with other volunteers, exchange students and host families.

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:

We expect the volunteer to be flexible and willing to try different kind of work. The volunteer must be openminded, curious and interested in learning.

The volunteer must like to spend time outdoors, as many of the activities are outdoor activities. Moreover the volunteer must be able to live in a small community where everybody knows each other.

The volunteer must be able to speak English at a conversational level.

Preferably the volunteer is over 20 years old and interested in gardening, but this is no condition as long as the volunteer is willing to learn.

Risk prevention, protection and safety:

Endelave Lægeurtehave complies with Danish safety regulations. The work in the garden does not involve any special risks.
