EVS volunteers needed to support Polish kindergarden for children with disabilities
EVS volunteers needed to support Polish kindergarden for children with disabilities
Volunteers participate in the classes and help the staff with changing children’s clothes, feeding the children or help them eat their meals, go to the toilet.
A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
The kindergarten is located in Mokotów district in Warsaw which is
situated on the left bank of the Vistula River. It is a residential
district. Embassies, residences, foreign delegations, well-known
companies, public administration offices and radio and television
broadcasting companies have found their place here. In the
South-Western part of the district, within the close vicinity to the
Okêcie airport and main roads and railway lines, there are service and
industrial areas whose character is not burdensome. In the district,
there are many educational establishments, including 54 kindergartens,
44 primary schools, 8 special schools, 20 secondary schools, 9
occupational schools, 21 secondary technical schools, 4 post-secondary
schools and 5 higher education establishments (Warsaw School of
Economics, Warsaw Agricultural University, Warsaw Technical University,
Warsaw University, Warsaw Higher Economics School). Thus, the number of
educational establishments is sufficient and even surpasses the needs
of the district. The inhabitants of Mokotów can choose between 3
theaters, 2 cinemas, 9 museums, 20 allotment complexes and sport areas,
2 Jordan gardens, 17 parks, 23 sport clubs and 6 indoor swimming pools.
Mokotów district has a good communication system.
The pupils of the kindergarten are physically disabled boys and girls
at the age between 3 and 10 years old. Physical disability is
accompanied by the other developmental disorders, e.g. behavioral
disorders, cerebral spastically, genetic disorders and multiple
disability. They are not able to live independently. Each of them needs
care and help in everyday activities to some extent. They are open to
new contacts, however, sometimes an effort is necessary to gain the
pupil's trust. They can be cheerful and joyful and come into emotional
contact. On the other hand, the verbal contact is difficult as most of
pupils does not speak.
The great diversity of our pupils' traits and characters as well as
different kinds of their disorders, which determine their behavior,
does not allow to describe shortly the target group. It seems that
readiness to new challenges and creativity of the volunteers will allow
them to create the relation satisfactory for them and for their pupils.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
The Special Kindergarten ? 393 can offer the volunteer a new learning
opportunities. For a volunteer who is interested in working with
disabled people this EVS project could be a unique chance to make use
of already gained knowledge and experience. Examples of various
volunteers' activities are listed below. We think that the volunteer
will have an opportunity to gain new experience, to practice different
skills (e.g. organizational, communication, foreign language, team
spirit, creativity, etc.), to obtain the knowledge about therapeutic
methods, to participate in the therapy of pupils in school and to
develop his own projects and initiatives.
In our opinion the project gives also individual profits to the
volunnteer. We would like to acquaint the volunteer with Polish
language, culture, history and tradition. We hope that the volunteer
will find new friends among the children and the staff.
We provide the volunteer the mentorship and supervision. He or she will
be able to count on the support of the specialists and other staff. The
work with disabled children is demanding, therefore we know that the
volunteer will need some trainings and guidelines. His development in
the work with children will be monitored. In the same time the
volunteer will have a field for his own creativity and invention. In
order to make the contact with the co-workers and children easier, the
Polish language course will be provided. The volunteer will also have a
possiblity to work on the website of the kindergarten, where
information about kindergarten events and everyday tasks are placed.
It would be great if the volunteer could be a person that has new
ideas, enriches the range of proposed activities for the pupils,
participates in the classes and helps the staff. The volunteer will
always be supported by the teachers and therapists. Together with them
he or she will help the children in everyday activities (e.g. changing
clothes, meals, toilet). Moreover, he will organize and coordinate the
workshops for them (e.g. artwork, musical activities, physiotherapy and
physical recreation, theatre activities, culture education, favourite
pastimes). Another important task would be the integration the pupils
with the local community by involving them in the local events,
organizing excursions, visting theatres, parks, zoo, etc. The voulnteer
could also prepare together with the children traditional Polish feast
for physically retarded children and for their families (e.g.
Christmas, Easter, Grandmother's Day, St. Andrew's Day).
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
As the target group is quite demanding, it would be good if the
volunteer hosted in our special kindergarten would have at least a
basic knowledge in the field of disability, mainly physical disability
and prefereably and may be even experience. Nevertheless, this is no
demand, because all the skills and knowledge to carry out the project
takss can be acquired during the project. The most important is that
the volunteer is interested and motivated to work with disabled
children and is open-minded, tolerant, patient and persistent person
who enjoys challenges. The candidate should have a team spirit but also
should be able to work independently. An advantage would be creativity
and good organizational skills.
The Polish Robert Schuman Foundation as a coordinating organization
will organize recruitment process to make sure that the most suitable
candidates are chosen. We are open to cooperation with different
volunteers and diferent sending organizations. The selection will be
carried out on the basis of CVs and Motivation letters that the
candidates would send us. Sometimes also short phone-interviews will be
carried out with the best candidates. The final decisions on the choice
of volunteers will be always consulted with the Special Kindergarten ?
393.
D. Special needs (if applicable)
Due to specific character of the hosting organization, there cannot be hosted any volunteers with special needs.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
The volunteers will be always able to count on the support of the
specialists, the staff. Each volunteer will have a supervisor and a
mentor. They will be able to ask for an instruction or advice. The
volunteers will be acquainted with the work safety and hygiene as well
as the rules and methods how to work with disabled children.
