FAIRbund Ngo's offers volunteer work in a nice team within a small kindergarten.
A.
The day-care centre on Mottler Straße can be found in a villa in
Gohlis, Leipzig, around 10 minutes away from the city centre. The
centre cares for 18 toddlers aged between 1 and 3 years old, and 30
children of kindergarten age. As a result of us working with such a
small group, our situation is very comfortable and familiar for the
children. Our facilities are open between 6.30 and 17.00. As there is
limited space in the garden in front of the house, the children play
frequently in the nearby Rosental Park, a part of Leipzig's Auenwald
forest.
Leipzig is the second largest city in the Federal State of Saxony, with
around 500,000 inhabitants. The economy has changed since reunification
in 1989 from the brown coal and textile industry, to research centres
and services; banks, the leipzig trade fair, the university and higher
education colleges for instance. Leipzig is well known for its many
historical places of interest, for example the 'Battle of the Nations'
memorial, the Thomaskirche, with its world renowned Choir and the the
Auerbachskeller in the Mädlerpassage. In Leipzig, you can also find the
Gewandhaus, Opera, modern art museum, various religious centres, along
with many cafes and resteraunts, exhibitions and galleries, lakes,
canals, and parks. Leipzig is in the middle of Germany and is easily
reached by car, train or aeroplane.
European volunteers have worked in FAIRbund since 2005. So far, this
has been a good experience, which we would like to build upon further
as an integral part of the work of the day-care centre.
B.
First of all, the volunteer should get to know the organisation and his
or her collegues and will be introduced to his or her new location and
be given a tour of the main office. The volunteer will be joining the
team in Motteler Straße and will be integrated into the routine of the
day-care centre. That means that together with a collegue, and the
children, the volunteer will observe and help to plan a year in the
kindergarten. Meal times and sleeping times are conducted together as
part of the daily routine and educational activities must be planned
and followed through. We celebrate festivals throughout the year,
Easter, Halloween, Christmas and birthdays for instance, and it would
be a good idea for the volunteer to introduce customs typical of his or
her home country to the children.
The focus of the Motteler Straße day-care centre is in sport and
exercise. The children have the opportunity to take part in sport
outside of the centre once a week, and there is plenty of sports
equipment at the centre itsself, for example, a punch bag, and a
climbing wall. The volunteer also has the opportunity to introduce his
or her own ideas.
Learning opportunities and challenges for the volunteer include:
- becoming acquainted with the practices of the organisation
- learning how the care providers network
- getting to know how the day-care centre works
- integrating into a team
- getting to know the cultural oppportunities in Leipzig
- exposure to media technology
C.
The following points are particularly relevant for the selection of the volunteer:
- Interest in working with children
- creativity
- sociable charachter and the ability to work as part of a team
- interest in learning German, and getting to know Leipzig and the surrounding area
We are open to all young people who would like to take part in the
European Voluntary Scheme, and we dont have any special preferences
concerning the sending organisation.
After we have recieved all of the applications, they will be checked
over reviewed with reference to the qualities and qualifications of the
applicants. We will conduct an interview over the telephone, or if
possible face to face, to give both sides the opportunity to get to
know eachother and ask questions, enabling us to reach a decision.
D.
FAIRbund e.V works in many different projects, also with disadvantaged
people, children and youth who require extra mentoring. Our staff
(psychologists, therapists, social workers, social educators, and
health educators) are in the position to care for and coach a
volunteer. Concerning the individual needs of the volunteer, we will
decide, together with the sending organisation and the volunteer,
whether integration into the project is possible.
E.
Before the voluntary service is starts, we make sure that the volunteer
is correctly insured. We make sure that we have all the details from
the volunteer concerning any potential health problems in advance, as
well as the details of a family member who we can contact in an
emergency. The volunteer has the phone number of his or her tutor so
that they can always be reached in case of emergency to offer
assistance. If the volunteer is underage, then he or she will stay with
a host family, who will be responsible for the welfare of the volunteer
in his or her free time. During the his or her day to day work, the
collegues of the underage volunteer will take care that they are not
exposed to dangerous situations and do not work for longer than is
permitted under the law.
