Dresden is the capital of the German federal state Saxony. It is
situated in the South East of Germany, in the part of the former GDR.
It has about half a million inhabitants. The Czech border is only about
30 km away, the border to the Polish Republic is about 80 km away.
Because of the many baroque buildings and its setting at the river
Elbe, Dresden is known as the "Florence of the Elbe" or the "Baroque
Pearl". Dresden is not only a cultural centre with a lot of museums,
theaters, cinemas and film clubs, but it has been playing an important
economical and scientific role, too. There are a few colleges,
scientific research institutions, an art academy,a conversatory, and a
university in Dresden. The river Elbe with all its romantic corners,
the bicycle paths along the Elbe Valley and the steamship cruises are a
big touristic attraction for the city. Moreover, the national park
Saxon Switzerland in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is nearby. (You can
find more information on www.dresden.de under the link "Tourismus" in
many other languages, and more pictures on www.dresden-bilder.de.).
The day-care center Rehefelderstraße is located in the northern part of
the river Elbe in the district Pieschen. The day-care center is
situated between restored middle-class houses and renovated courtyards.
The inner city, the zoo, the Great Garden (park) and sports grounds are
easily accessed by public transport. In addition, the forest "Dresdner
Heide" is just around the corner. The district Pieschen (read: Peeshen)
is a former workers' housing area with a lot of older buildings. In the
19th century a few attractive residential and business houses were
built there, in the 50s and 70s a few small appartment blocks were
built in the outskirts of this district. At the moment the district is
changing a lot - all over the district old houses are being rebuilt and
renovated. This means that the long-term residents are being mixed with
younger or newer people. People from the typical lower social stratum,
who used to live in this district, now share their district with young
families and people with various kinds of living concepts.
The building of the day-care center Rehefelderstraße 7 is situated on
top of the groccery shop "Netto" and consists of two floors. This means
that we can offer two patios: one close to the entry and one as being
part of the garden (1556 square meters). Adjacent you will find the
primary school as well as the two branch offices. Since a couple of
years we have been working with the team of the primary school. A local
library, the community center, the police, and the trainstation of
Pieschen are all close by. The river Elbe and the fire department can
be reached easily on foot. All these facts can be used in a positive
way as they can be used by the children to explore their surroundings.
The main part of the children are from the district Pieschen. Most of
their families have been living in this district for generations. There
are cheap and expensive apartments available in the district. This
again means that families of all classes live together. Most of our
parents are either married or live together. This, in turn, means that
most of our children live with both parents. However, we do have some
who also live with their grandparents. 15-20% of the parents are single
parents. Moreover, we have children of different nationalities.
B.
The potential volunteer will be asked to take part in the daily routine
of the day-care center. We view the volunteer as support for the
educators. He or she should be initiative and come up with his or her
own ideas. The main tasks involve playing with children in groups and
offering different kind of stimuli for them. There are many
possibilties of which kind of games the volunteer could play with the
children and which methods he or she would like to use. We would also
like the volunteer to tell about his or her own country and teach some
phrases in his or her mother tongue to the children and staffers.
By being initiative curiosity will be awakened, understanding for
cultural differences will increase, interest for the European diversity
and shared values will be developped. Of course we wouldn't leave the
colunteer alone. We would support him as much as possible so he or she
feel secure enough to come up with new ideas.
We can't give a weekly schedule at this point of time, as we also like
to alter our schedule according to the aptitudes of our staff.
The weekly hours are 38,5 hours. Holidays are 24 days per year. However, we are quite flexible.
How the potential volunteer would spend his or her free time is
completely up to them. However, we would like to offer strong support
especially at the beginning of the stay.By doing so we believe that an
encounter of different cultures, habits, and ways of living is
possible. We see the volunteer as an enrichment in our organization.
The supporting organization OUTLAW gGmbH makes sure that expectations
are met and that the volunteer will not be burdened with complex
sturctures.
C.
The OUTLAW gGmbH supports the equal treatment of socially disadvantaged
groups, handicapped people, people of immigrant families,
underpriviledged children. This implies that we don't ask for specific
requirements or a specific sex.
However, we ask volunteers to be willing to work voluntarily and to be
motivated to do the tasks described above. We especially ask for high
motivation, as we often work with underpriviledged children and young
people and therefore need a psychologically strong person.

E.
As an organisation of child and youth care we are used to dealing with
disadvantaged young people. However, we would not like to welcome a
volunteer who is that social disadvantaged that he or she would need a
very high amount of care-taking. We also would not like the volunteer
to be restricted in his or her ability to carry out the tasks described
above. We expect young people who act maturely and who agree to our
moral values of living together.
F.
In order to prevent any risks and to deal with crisis successfully, the
former tutor of the project of the OUTLAW gGmbH took part in a training
for project tutors, funded by the Youth in Action program. In this
seminar our tutor acquired a variety of methods of preventing conflict
situations and dealing with them when they occur.
Moreover, we strongly believe that the selection of the matching
volunteer should be the starting point of risk prevention. Not only do
we regularly talk about typical problem areas such as culture shock or
homesickness with the volunteers, but also observe and evaluate the
performance of the volunteer on a regular basis. In addition, in
accordance with our National Agency, we modify or take specific
measures to ease tense situations, should they occur.
The tutor at present would like to take part in such a seminar as soon
as possible (most likely from November 2-5 in Weimar). She has all the
data of the seminar the former tutor took part in at her disposal.
