minimum English and German language skills required
A. The 3 youthclubs that are summarized as M24 are situated around the
centre of the district Pankow in Berlin. The youthclubs among
themselves can be reached very easily.
Pankow is an inner city housing estate. Concerning the age and the
social background the population of Pankow is mixed. The access to the
public transport (bus, tram, u-bahn and s-bahn) is very good. E.g. you
can reach the M24 by U-Bahn from Alexanderplatz in 20 minutes.
There are cycle tracks as well as a connection to the motorway. But there are also parks and green spaces nearby.
B. During his or her EVS, the volunteer will learn about all different
fields of youth work in youth clubs in a theoretical as well as
practical approach, e.g. planing and realisation of concerts, book and
poem readings and exibitions. Part of this will also be the public
relations for these events. An other big working area is dealing with
manual and creative activities in different workshops (working with
wood, metal or screenprint). At the beginning the volunteer will learn
how to use it, in a second step he or she should be able to train and
teach youngsters using different methods to be creative in these rooms
(with the support of full-time staff of the M24 or/and the 2 other
youthclubs which work together with the M24). It is also possible to
organise Airbush and Graffiti projects for the youngsters.
There are also workshops concerning electronic medias (video, image and
sound editing). The future volunteer as well as the youngsters will
have the possibility to learn these technics and to use it in different
projects.
Music plays an important role in all our youthclubs. Within the three
youthclubs we have 7 rehearsal rooms and one recording studio which are
used by 16 bands. This offer will be completed by workshops about event
technology (audio and light engineering).
An other main focus of our work are international youth exchanges and
projects on participation, e.g. diving camps and exchanges of musicans
and bands.
The facility is well integrated in a regional network working in the
same or similar fields. In the facility as well as in the network, the
volunteer will have several opportunities to make contact with other
volunteers (national or international) and with honorary members of the
institution, with whom they can work together on some of the projects.
During their daily work, volunteers will participate in team
consultations, intern and extern meetings and professional trainings.
Furthermore, a language course will be offered at the VHS.
The volunteer will work in a team and be responsible for certain tasks.
The volunteers are provided the opportunity to chose a focal point
according to their interests and talents, for which he or she will be
responsible during their project (of course always with the favored and
needed support).
C. The volunteers should be tolerant ond openminded. They should be
interested in working together with children and youth. They should
also be interested in working on projects focussing on political
education, different medias and self organisation. Basic computer
skills as well as skills in working with different medias are . If
there are no communication skills in German the volunteers should be
interested in and willing to learn German. Oral and written English
language skills are absolutely necessary for the international
projects. The volunteer should be open to show her/his cultural
background in the daily work. But they do not have to arrive with a
clear structured concept of their volunteer year, this will be
developped together. Regarding the sending organisation, we have no
special wishes, but we keep in touch with partner organisations in
Israel.
The expression of interest of the M24 can easily be obtained by those
interested at the internet page of "go4europe". People who are
interested can contact our co-ordinating organisation. Moreover, before
the selection interviews with new volunteers, all (accredited) sending
organisations are informed by the co-ordinating organisation and are
asked to send them the applications of interested juveniles. As
volunteers do not need special knowledge for their EFD in the M24, our
project can be interesting for a notably high number of adolescents.
D. 2
E. In the beginning we would like to refrain from hosting volunteers
with fewer opportunities. This is due to the fact that we first would
like to try to work together with a young person from a different
cultural background and see how this develops. Nevertheless, in the
future we are sure that we can host a young person with fewer
opportunities.
F. As soon as the volunteers arrive, they will be introduced to the
project, the colleagues and their field of work as well as their
personal tutors. The latter will aid them not only with their personal
problems but also with difficulties concerning their work. Furthermore,
the adolescents will be supported in establishing contact with ex-evs,
who can become a second backup next to the people in their actual
working position. The VJF will also encourage them to approach other
volunteers (e.g. from other coordinated projects).
In addition, frequent feedback discussions should provide them the
opportunity to bring up possibly occuring problems immediately and in a
safe setting, and as a group, they can find a solution together.
The contact between the recepting and sending organisation will be hold
up during the whole duration of the project to ensure the possibility
to intervene in the case of tensions or crisis.
In the facility, the volunteers are instructed to all areas concerning
work and fire prevention. They are also introduced to the
particularities of the building and the usable open spaces. Moreover,
there will be an extensive instruction to the conditions (fire
prevention, escape routes, arrangement of the keys and so on) of their
quarters where the volunteers will be accommodated during their staying
(together with the VJF).
