There are some goals of this school: to make possilbe for children to gain knowledge and skills which are necessary for them to get the graduation from the Gymnasium; to provide pupils with pedagogical care in accordance with the needs and possibilities of the school; to provide pupils with full safety.
A. Project environment:
Regular activities in the host organisation
Pupils attending to Gymnasium are between the ages of 13 and 16. They
learn in classes 1 to 3. The total number of pupils is 572 while there
are 50 teachers and 21 administrative workers employed. There are no
volunteers. The school is open from 7.00 a.m. till 4.00 p.m. At this
school pupils learn foreign languages such as English and German. There
are a lot of activities connected with the development of the language
skills. Language teachers organize a lot of competitions connected with
the knowledge about European Union. Our school organizes
language-teaching tours e.g. to Prague. There are also other activities,
which are organized by the teachers from this school. Our kids go to
the swimming pool, ski in winter on a regular basis with the teachers
of physical education. There is also a range of sport activites whose
aim is to develop pupils' skills in: athletics, aerobics, basketball
and handball. Our Gymnasium has a lot of clubs, which can be joined by
the pupils from our school. There is a club called "KEKS". Its main aim
is to help children to discover the cultural aspects. Children are
taken to the theatre, to the opera and there are also tours organized
connected with the history of Poland. For instance, members of the club
went to Warsaw with some of the teachers from our school and they saw
the National Musem's exhibition, a play in the theatre as well as many
other monuments in the capital city of Poland. There is also a club
that is in charge of movies (which are often displayed in the original
language version). The teacher in charge of the club teaches music in
Gymnasium and is the director of the school's choir. Thanks to the club
and its members our school has its web site where all the events held
in our school are later described: http://sugim1klodzko.w.interia.pl
Local community
The district of Klodzko (1,643 km2 and 182 thoursand inhabitants) is
functionally and physio-graphically distinct from the rest of the
Lower-Silesian Region. It is surrounded by mountain ranges forming a
natural barrier, separating it from the rest of the country, and
creating a form of an enclave. The relatively small area boasts of an
exceptionally large number of various riches. It is the largest
conlomeration of renowned health resorts, the rock labyrinths of the
Sto?owe (Table) Mountains, the wilderness of the Bystrzyckie and the
Bialskie Mountains, the famous sanctuaries, charming little towns
situated in mountain dales, mountain strongholds, castle ruins,
churches and caves. All of that is surrounded by a whole diversity of
legends and stories of unusual charm, blending the influences of the
various cultural values, as well as rich deposits of mineral waters,
favours the development of the touristic, recreational and spa
facilities. The five health resorts of the district of K³odzko, can
receive over 12 thousand people at a time. The catering facilities of
various standards offer over 20 tousand places. Among the mostly
visited spots in the district are the Stolowe Mountains, the sancuary
in Wambierzyce, Niedzwiedzia (Bear) Cave, as well as the health
resorts. The location of Europejskie Forum M³odzie¿y's office is in a
small town called Bystrzyca K³odzka. The town has around 15,000
inhabitants and is situated in the southern part of the district of
Klodzko in Poland. The its location is picturesque and scenic,
containing a history stretching back to the Middle Ages. The its future
economy depends significantly on the development of tourism and its
traditions. Klodzko is located 85 kilomenters away from Wroclaw, the
biggest town in our region (with 700000 inhabitans) and located
approximately 200 km away from Prague, the capital of the Czech
Republic. There are very good railway and road connections from the
town to the Czech Republic. The biggest problem in Klodzko and the
surrounding area is high and increasing unemployment, which currently
stands at around 26 %. This results many economic and social concerns
(e.g. lack of cultural life and youth facilities, lack of public
transport, lack of eco-tourist facilities, etc.). There is a lack of
youth facilities, giving birth to the necessity for more cultural and
sports acivities. There are many groups of young people in Bystrzyca
Klodzka and European Youth Clubs in the region, containing groups with
interests in theatre, music, dancing, and sports. However it is
critical that they have adequate support and options to further develop
their interests, particularly on an internaional level. Similar future
projects and extension of the Eurpean theme are vital to allowing the
local community and the district of Klodzko to continue the balance and
improve its social and economic infrastructure.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers:
The volunteer will organise or take part in workshops, which are all
carried out as after class activities and are not regular lessons.
According to volunteer's interests, different clubs can be offered at
school. These clubs function as the optional activity for pupils
between the ages of 13 and 16. At these meetings they improve their
language skills, knowledge about different areas of interest as wells
as finding the chance to express their creative skills. The after class
activities in which the volunteer can take part are as follows:
-Theatre club deals with teaching pupils language by performing in
different school plays prepared by pupils and teachers from our school.
Volunteers will work with the teacher and kids on performances or
concentrate on language skills of the kids.
- KEKS. The main task is to get acquianted with different theatres, go
to the movies as well as to watch the best theatre performances in the
country. Pupils learn about literature, make web pages devoted to
culture in Poland, Europe and most of all about our region. The
volunteer can attend these after class activities, work with the
students on preparing different information connected with culture,
compare polish culture to the one of his/her own, talk about famous
theatres in his /her country etc.

take part in any of them depending on his/her interests. The main task
here would be to be with kids and talk to them in a target language, to
prepare and carry out projects about different sports in English.
- There is also a poetry club where pupils learn different types of
poetry, poets. They even learn pieces of poetry. They read literature,
make performances on the basis of famous literature. The volunteer can
teach children about his/her favourite poet, learn with them different
poems in foreign languages.
- Scout's club- all the scouts from Klodzko attend the meetings. They
are held once a week, but the members have the access to the place
everyday and do different range of activities - depending on the
interest. They have a band, plan weekend's trips, holidays, camps,
different range activities etc. The volunteer can take active part in
all the activities held by scouts.
- There is a school choir where children have the chance both to sing
and learn how to do it. They attend different range of singing
competitions together with performing during assemblies, special
meetings. There is going to be a music festival of songs to be sung in
a foreign language where volunteer can help pupils learn the lyrics,
with the intonation, choose the song, sing with the choir and
participate in other activities held in our school.
- Geography club - children learn about our region, they go on various
tours in our mountains, take part in different tourist meetings and
they travel around the region. The volunteer can take part in all the
tours and activities held by the club. He/she will help the pupils,
with the co-operation of the teacher responsible for the club, with the
preparation of different tours, choosing the place of the destination,
making plan of the trips, preparing the maps etc.
Most of the above-mentioned clubs are held everyday and are mostly
after-class activities. The volunteer can choose among them as well as
introduce his or her own ideas of work.
- European Club is held in English as an after class activity. Its main
objective is to raise awareness of different nations within European
Union, the structure of European Parliament and to learn about
different countries and their cultures. etc. Most of the work is done
by the project method which requires research, guidance and group
(team) work. We also organise different language trips for our students
to the neighbouring countries such as Czech Republic, the capital city
(Praque) of which we visited. The trips are held every school year and
the volunteers can take part in them. They can help with the
preparation, make plans, schedule for the trip, work on the most
important information connected with the country etc.
The activities at the club could consist of information sharing,
discussion with pupils, some games, quizzes or manual works, etc.
During the subject presentation audio-visual materials like videos,
maps, pictures, posters and other materials can be used.
At meetings at the European club, the volunteer should:
- present information and materials e.g. countries in the European Union ,
- organise some competitions, games, dramas, manual works or provide his/her own ideas connected with the daily subject,
- encourage pupils to answer the questions and lead conversations in a foreign language,
- organise some games, quizzes in lessons or realise his/her own ideas
- search for new ideas and structure workshops for pupils
Our school has its own newspaper, edited once a month, where the
articles are written both in Polish as well as in English and German.
All the people interested in writing, editing, taking photos can take
active part in creating school newspaper. There is also a web page (in
Polish). The plan is to make a new one also for the non polish speakers
as well as to help with the edition of the already existing one. The
main task of the volunteer with the co-operation of the teacher and
pupils working for newspaper and web page is to find the most
interesting articles to write about, to take photos connected with both
school life and interesting cultural events.
The volunteers will have the chance to train and improve their skills
throughout the project. They'll have possibility to increase their
knowledge in the fields off:
- creating and managing youth projects
- working with a group, methods of team building, communication, intercultural learning
- pedagogic methods of working with children and youth
At the beginning of volunteer's programme he/she will be introduced
his/her duties by the leaders who will provide support, but through
time, it is hoped that the volunteer will learn more and require less
and less assistance, carrying out tasks independently.
All volunteer's tasks do not substititute professional work. The
volunteer's tasks do not contain an administrative character, because
full-time employees of school perform these tasks. Tasks are not
designed in order to achieve profit, because school is a public
institution with no aim to make financial profit from their activities.
The Volunteer will learn his/her responsibilities for pupils with the
support of teachers from school, how to structure language activities
during the workshops, how to do research and preparation on a specific
topic and how to communicate and work with children and youngsters.
Moreover, the volunteer will learn throughout the project to speak in
front of a group of people.
The volunteers will meet with their mentor regularly to talk about
their work, problems, ideas etc. Individual meetings will also be held
if needed or requested
Saturday and Sunday are free (Weekend). The volunteer will also take
part in school festivals and trips e.g. sport trips, visiting
exhibition, and he/she will be free to initiate his/her own projects
and ideas. If there are trips or special events organised during the
weekend, the volunteer will get another day off in return. Furthermore,
the volunteer can participate in activities of the
coordinating-organization - Europejskie Forum Mlodziezy by giving, for
instance, country presentations on the youth seminar "Euroweek - school
for leaders".
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:
The characteristics and skills the volunteer is expected to have:
1)speaking English on a basic level (speaking a second language may
also be useful but is not essential); there's a possibility to arrange
language support for the volunteer if he/she has a desire to improve a

Gimnazjum nr 1 im Adama Mickiewicza has been involved in European
Voluntary Service since 2005. Ever since then we have been cooperating
with the YOUTH program and also with Youth in Action Program. We have
hosted volunteers from differetnt parts of Europe for long-term
projects. We have cooperated very closly with Europejskie Forum
Mlodziezy from Bystrzyca Klodzka (EFM).
The main aim of our school is that we would like to give the
opportunity to our pupils to meet people from different countries, to
teach them how to work in internaional groups, to form pro-European
consciousness in pupils' minds, to teach them tolerance for different
nations, cultures and religions, to form openness for European
problems, to widen the knowledge about countries which belong to
European Union, to create an atmosphere which integrate the members of
the school club and to develop language skills.
The Project is very important for the local community in terms of their getting better understanding of European Integration.
We would also like to give the opportunity to youngsters from others
countries to get to know Poland, a country often underestimated
especially in Western Europe.
