Hand in Hand
Hand in Hand
The volunteer will care for the children up to 4 to 5 days a week together with the other kindergarten teachers in the daily routine. This includes playing and eating with them, physical education, music and craftwork. They will accompany the children on trips, riding therapy and swimming lessons and in general help the children along the various steps in their development. The volunteer will be expected to speak in the English language to allow the children access to a foreign language. Teaching the language will take place based on the theory of the immersion method (Ref). Together with our guest we wish to develop projects with the aim of teaching the children the unique characteristics of the volunteer's culture. The volunteer will choose which projects they wish to offer to the children. In addition to the work in the kindergarten, there are further opportunities to get familiar with other fields within Humanitas e.g. working with youths and adults with disabilities, working in a nursing home and in special needs. They can also take part in public events e.g. "Tages der Begegneung" in Leipzig (Leipzig day for the disabled). In general we are looking forward to the commitment and initiative of the volunteer and to the support of their projects.
Based on the philosophy of our organisation, at the heart of our work is the integration of children with risk of abnormal development or disabilities as well as children from different national and social backgrounds. In our modern educational concept we encourage the interaction and companionship of children from different social backgrounds and disabilities.
Requirements
We are looking forward to applications from Europeans interested in the
care and nursery teaching of pre-school children. What is most important
to us and indeed an absolute requirement is that the candidates are
respectful, sensitive and have a caring way with children from the ages
of 3 to 7. We expect that the candidate possess the capability to work
independently in the kindergarten and accompany the children throughout
their daily routine e.g. washing, dressing and eating.
We would very much like to work with volunteers who have a qualification
in nursery teaching, who have recently qualified or are planning to
qualify in the near future. As an alternative, applicants who possess a
degree in child care or education, or are presently taking relevant
courses or planning to study in these fields will be most welcome.
Preference will be given to those who are qualified or those seeking
such qualifications. However others who do not have qualifications in
this field but have a desire and interest to work with pre-school
children are also invited to apply and will be given full consideration.
The candidate should possess strong social skills and a positive
attitude to the exchange of cultures.
Age restrictions
The applicants should not be younger than 18 or older than 26 years of
age.
Language skills
English language skills are preferred.. To ensure adequate communication
with the kindergarten teachers basic German language skills are
preferred.
Selection process
The selection of the candidates will take place through a committee
which will consist of the director of the kindergarten, two kindergarten
teachers and two parents. The selection process will be documented and
the decision explained. All applicants will be notified of the decision.
Support
Our application is supported by our organisation Humanitas Leipzig
gGmbH. We work with the co-operation and support of the organisation
LeISA GmbH/Soziokulturelles Zentrum Die VILLA in Leipzig. The volunteer
who would come to us would be offered accommodation in the an apartment
in the villa for European Volunteers. They will receive full board and
lodgings and would be supported in their recreational time and in any
unforeseen difficulties that may arise.
