There 5 small settlements on the territory of Park: Smiltyne, Nida, Juodkrante, Preila and Pervalka. All together they make administrative unit by name Neringa. Curonian Spit National Park is a place for family holiday, recreation activity, not for people, who prefer noisy discos and dancing. The place is calm, homelike and charming. There are beautiful beaches, forests, dunes and places of cultural interest. Curonian Spit is a peninsula in the Baltic Sea, which belongs to Russia and Lithuania. All part of peninsula in Lithuania is a territory of Curonian Spit National Park. It is the end of peninsula so, if you will be in Lithuania, you can arrive here only by ferry from Klaipeda city. The journey takes 15 min. There are no noisy highways, railway stations, municipal transport like in other cities and towns. In 2000 the Curonian Spit was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage.
At the beginning of the 20th century there were small fishing villages and were practically known only in Lithuania and other former Soviet Union countries. Today the tourists can visit the ethnographical museums and get acquainted with the way of life of fishers that lived here a hundred years ago, hear history about old villages buried by sand.
Curonian spit NP is one of the most popular destinations in Lithuania for local and foreign tourist.
Most of the local older people in Neringa are speaking in Lithuanian and Russian, younger people prefer English. Specialists of the park speak Lithuanian, Russian. Most of them are fluent in English too. In Klaipeda city it is easy to communicate in English, and the Tourist Information Centre locates not far from the ferry in beautiful old part of the city. The old part of the city is the centre of museums and galleries. There are many pubs, vine-bars, and other places of relaxation.
Living standards in Lithuania are rather high for most Lithuanian people and for people from Eastern Europe. But during time of economic crisis the prices of property rent, food and most kind of service sector were cutting down.
Accomodation for volunteers will be organised in Klaipeda, so volunteer have to note that he/she will be going everyday to NP by ferry. Klaipeda city the third large city in Lithuania. Klaipeda city was chosen because of better transport organisation along Curonian spit national park (park staff starts from Klaipeda) and better volunteers adaptation point.
