NGO from Greece is looking for 2 EVS volunteers to support a children activities project
The Cultural Triangle of Prespa would like to host 2 volunteers in Prespa region.
CTP's Youth programme focuses on providing educational, informational
and leisure time activities to children and young people in the Prespa
and Florina region (some projects include as well the Prespa
cross-border region-Greece, Albania and fYROM). Informal learning about
arts and new technologies, informational and support activities on
topics such as volunteerism and civil society, social inclusion,
physical, psychological and mental health and job opportunities as well
as awareness raising about important issues such as the environement,
gender, human rights, cultural diversity and European integration are
the main topics of the project. The key participants are NGOs and other
Youth institutions, the local communities and young people. The main
goals are: motivation, informal learning, awarness rasining,
collaboration and networking.
All the projects are long-term (minimum 1-2 years) activities such as:
-A programme of Youth activities including workshops, seminars,
informational activities, support groups, exchanges, meetings and
cultural activities (concerts, exhibitions). The programme aims to
support young people's initiatives and to help them develop as European
citizens.
- Running of a Youth Club which functions as an internet-caf?, meeting
place of young people, exhibitions, events and workshop place. The
Youth club provides as well on a continuous base informational material
on topics such as physical, psychological and mental health,
volunteerism programmemes and job opportunities.
- Youth exchanges and youth trainings
- The CTP Box: educational activities in all villages of Prespa (workshops, moving library, games and events)
- The research, revival and utilization of our cultural heritage
includes: research through a variety of research methods (reviewing
previews, research and literature; interviewing and travel);
compilation of reports based on the research results; and revival of
costumes, traditions, crafts and occupations through workshops, events
and other activities.
Community
Prespa is a rurally isolated community of 1800 people living in the
mountainous border region of northern Greece by a pair of lakes. Of
strategic importance during wars in the region the area remained
sensitive after the Greek civil war. Many local people emigrated during
this period decimating Prespa's population. The lakes were declared a
national park in 1974 and the park is unique in Greece as being the
only one with living communities within its boundaries. The advent of
an irrigation system in the mid sixties saw a move away from a
traditional mixed agrarian economy to a monoculture based in growing
white haricot beans. In the last decade tourism has begun to supplement
the local economy.
It suffers from typical problems associated with rurally isolated
communities: depopulation, inadequate services, a sense of social
isolation, impoverishment of biodiversity, and a low level of
professional skills. The local infrastructure is poor; few transport
links, poor medical and educational facilities and little cultural
provision. The community continues to suffer from the exodus of young
people to urban centres, particularly young women. The area is home to
a still astonishing biodiversity, a rich cultural heritage, an array of
archaeological remains and a wide ethnic diversity. It is one of the
few remaining areas to which the Sarakatsani, a transhumant shepherding
community, return each summer to pasture their flocks in the mountains.
The volunteers should be interested in making activities with children in rural area :
- Preparation of the weekly activities for children an youth to
make them discover a new activity, gain skills: it can be a sport game,
a handicraft or musical workshop,
- Preparation of special events (every two months): planning of
one day activities, within a special theme (for example Carnaval,
Easter, Christmas, the Earth day…), a sport event..
- Visit 3 times a week the nearby villages with books, games whenever it is possible (according to weather conditions mostly.
