NGO from Italy looks for a young people for an EVS project
NGO from Italy looks for a young people for an EVS project
Volunteers will carry out animation activities with children, youth and elderly people during the afternoons, mainly cultural, play, educational and sport activities.
The EVS project is sited in Genoa, a city with about 600.000
inhabitants, in the region Liguria, a coast city, 30 km long. The
neighbourhood where the association is active has 7000 inhabitants and
it is set in the extreme west of Genoa. The neighbourhood "Cà Nuova"
(also known as CEP) has been built during the 60s on the hills behind
the town line near the seaside and has been assigned exclusively to
public housing, for disadvantaged social categories, and afterwards for
new generations of disadvantaged persons, as workers, immigrants from
south Italy and, generally, by other disadvantaged individuals.
The actual problems in the area are the lack of social and employment
opportunities, the presence of different kinds of disadvantaged persons
(socially, economically, psychologically, legally), the lack of
services for the citizenry.
Within some decades the area has managed to overcome a situation of
social exclusion and marginalisation in respect to the rest of the city
thanks to the inhabitants' engagement in citizens' associations, as the
association Consorzio Sportivo Pianacci. These realities are a social
reference for the inhabitants.
The EVS volunteers will carry out their activities in the CEP area, in
the centre of the association, in the facility PalaCel, in the offices
of the association and outdoor in the green area.
Volunteers will be hosted in the area or in the nearby neighbourhood on
the seaside (Voltri, Prà, Pegli or Centre), given that these
neighbourhood have a better public transportation system and this will
allow volunteers to have a better mobility in the city. The apartment
for volunteers will be identified in the months before their arrival,
so the rules of the house will depend mostly of the volunteers
themselves. The volunteer will be hosted in an apartment with other
persons and he/she will have a single room.
As far as the involvement of volunteers in the activities is concerned,
the rules of the association will also apply to the EVS activities,
this means that during their specific training volunteers will deepen
the rules of organising activities, also according to the target group
(e.g. in the case of activities with children volunteers will receive a
specific training also regarding the main rules to follow).
As far as the service and learning opportunities are concerned, volunteers will be involved in the following activities:
- ordinary initiatives of the association,
- annual events (according to the interests of the volunteers and to
the timing of their arrival, the association will organise the
participation of the volunteers and their service),
- una tantum initiatives
- project management processes regarding social and cultural events for the neighbourhood.
The service offers young people a wide range of opportunities, with a
timetable, for the months from September to May from Monday to Friday,
9 - 12 am and 3 - 7 pm (with some variations according to evening
activities) and from June to August, from Monday to Friday, 3 - 10 pm.
We detail the activities for EVS volunteers:
" Continuous activities of the association.
Volunteers will carry out animation activities with children, youth and
elderly people during the afternoons, mainly cultural, play,
educational and sport activities. These are organised in the green area
during summer and in the sport facilities and during winter time in the
centre of the association and in PalaCep.
The activities are:
- welcome and animation for children, families and adolescents;
- organisation of football games and competitions;
- workshops for families and children;
- support to the organisation of activities for the association's
members and elderly people (ex. trips, meetings, city events etc.)
- support to the organisation of initiatives for children in
partnership with other bodies (ex. participation in animation and play
events, trips, games etc.). This means managing enrolments to the
initiatives, elaborating promotion materials, promoting the events,
organising and carrying out the initiative.
As for the methods for involving the volunteer in the activities, the
volunteer will receive a specific training on animation and will
support for a given period of a month the association's volunteers in
order to get to know the beneficiaries of the activities and in order
to be able to be part of the activities.
" Annual events
During summer, from May to the end of August, the volunteers will give
a service of supporto, organisation and management of Ceppions League,
Cus cus and Pesto, Che estate alla Pianacci etc. (see above for more
details). The volunteers will help as follows: preparation of
activities, contacts with local community, promotion activities,
support for animation with children and youth, cooking. During the days
when events take place, the volunteers will: organise and equip spaces,
organise activities for youth, welcome families, youth, etc. Moreover,
according to the volunteer's interests he or she can also propose and
carry out own activities (es. specific animation for children,
workshops, cultural initiatives).
As for the method of involving the volunteer in these activities, the
volunteer will receive training regarding the different steps of the
organising events' process and will also support other volunteers from
the association.
" Specific projects and activities
This type of activities allow volunteers a wide range of choice,
according to their interests, and it is an open space where volunteers
can give their contribution to the ongoing activities or can propose
new initiatives. For example, volunteers can support the search for
European partners for other projects, they can also support the project
elaboration with their ideas. According to their interests, volunteers
will participate in the meetings for the organisations of these new
initiatives.
In addition to these activities, volunteers will be involved in the
general management of the activities, for example support and
management of the promotion and communication via Internet and the
website of the association.
In the phase dedicated to the elaboration of each specific EVS project,
an evaluation will be carried out on the volunteer's motivation and
interest, the Consorzio's activities, in order to define a personalised
project for each volunteer.
As for the involvement methods for volunteer, there will be several phases:
PHASE 1 - MONTH 1: the volunteer starts language classes, the general
and specific training start, getting to know the
area/city/association/volunteers activities will be organised with the
volunteer and the volunteer will be involved together with the other
local volunteers as in shadowing support.
PHASE 2 - MONTH 2 TO 12: the volunteer will continue language training,
training will be provided in steps, and the volunteer will be more and
more autonomous, according to own motivation.
The volunteer will receive specific training for social animation for
children and youth and for organising events and projects.
The role of the volunteers will be to support the service to the
community, as follows: role in animation and educational, social and
cultural activities for the citizens, and in particular for children,
youth and families; role of support in all aspects concerning
organising the association's annual events; role of support and
proposals for the una tantum initiatives of the association (for
example, the volunteer can propose own activities to be carried out
within the host organisation).
As far as learning opportunities are concerned, we can identify several
themes and competences that the EVS in Consorzio Pianacci can provide
volunteers with:
" Active participation in active citizenship activities, related to the
development of social competences and the awareness of the democratic
mechanisms;
" Competences related to project management and organisation of events;
" Competences of social interaction in intercultural realities;
" Competences in community work and local decision-making processes;
" Competences related to social activities with children/young people and their families;
" Informal learning through knowing and living in another country.
EVS Volunteers will be involved in the promotion of EVS at local level.
During the first months of hosting, there will be meetings with the
local community and, especially, networks of organisation from the
area, in order to promote the EVS and the Youth in Action Programme to
other associations and to the community.
As far as the development of the educational opportunities of volunteers, we can quote the following guide lines:
" Training about the neighbourhood, meetings with various associations and groups;
" Training on Youth in Action Programme;
" Language training;
" Training and peer-to-peer support in the activities;
" Training and meetings with experts on the themes of the project;
" Participation in events and initiatives useful for the volunteers'
service. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in
initiatives related to their project;
" Intercultural training;
" Informal learning about practical aspects of living in another country;
" Knowledge of other European experiences of associations from Genoa
(other EVS projects, meeting with other volunteers, other youth
projects);
" Information sessions dedicated to practical aspects of their staying
in Genoa (for example, information about the city up to information
about supermarkets close to volunteers' house, etc.);
" Continuous support at personal level and support for the dissemination phase of EVS projects;
" Evaluation sessions, together with support persons in the host association and with the mentor.
Volunteers will be involved in the service for an average 5 days a
week, for an average of 7 hours a day, for an average of 35 hours a
week.
The standard programme of the voluntary service - which will vary
according to the different activities and periods in the year - is:
MON: morning - language course; afternoon: specific training and
support in afternoon activities with young people (recreational centre
activities, own activities with young people in the neighbourhood,
activities at the skating rink);
TUE: morning: language course / activities with other organisations at
the volunteer's choice; afternoon: specific training and support in
afternoon activities with young people (recreational centre activities,
own activities with young people in the neighbourhood, activities at
the skating rink);
WED: morning: programming meeting / support for organisation of events,
and network connections / knowledge of the territory activities;
afternoon: activities with children/young people or elder people;
THU: morning: support for activities management / support in
organisation of events and network connections / specific training;
afternoon: social activities with elder people / activities proposed by
volunteers themselves;
FRI: morning: evaluation meeting and programming of next week's activities; afternoon: evaluation meeting with mentor.
SAT, SUN: days off.
This "standard week" presented here in brief can vary according to the
activities of the association. For example, from May to August, the
service hours will not vary, but volunteers will be involved more in
organisation of summer events (Estate al Pianacci, Ceppions League, Cus
Cus and Pesto etc.). It is also possible that during the period from
June to September the volunteers will be asked to be present during
Saturday afternoon, in case an event is organised. In any case, this
change of timetable will be agreed for with the volunteer.
In general the selection process will be transparent in all its phases
and the selection exit will be communicated to all those involved in an
adequate manner and time.
Some important criteria in the selection process are:
" In the selection process we will evaluate the above mentioned aspects
and the motivation, regardless of ethnic, religious, sexual
orientation, political opinions issues;
" Volunteers' academic training does not count as a selection criteria;
" The selection of volunteers will take into consideration the volunteer's motivation and profile and project activities.
In order to have an open and accessible selection process the host association will:
" Include the project in the database of hosting projects;
" Ask for support in partners' research from the Italian National Agency in order to identify sending partners;
" Send the news regarding the selection process to its mailing list;
" Promote the information to other associations that are involved in Action 2 (Volunteer Centres, other EVS volunteers etc.);
" Send the news to specific newsletters.
As far as sending organisation are concerned, it is an added value if
the sending association tackles the same issues as the Consorzio, but
this is not an exclusion criteria for other associations. In general,
we are available for all sending organisations.
