People with disabilities project from Poland has one EVS free place
The first task of the volunteer will be to cooperate with the person in charge of a workshop group (especially theatre one).
A. Project environment:
The Centre in Rumia is situated 20 km away from Gdynia (Poland) one of
the Tricity (Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot), is well communicated with the
city, the region and the whole Poland. Gdynia is situated by the sea,
is a young modern city, near Gdansk with its over 1000 year tradition.
In Rumia there live almost 45 thousand people.
In our Centre we organize workshops for people with intellectual
disabilities, who are unable to take up a job. Those workshop
activities are aimed at rehabilitation, which leads to an overall
development of each participant. The workshops take place in
therapeutic studios under the direction of instructors. The works which
are created during these classes have great artistic value. The
instructors' role is just to support and the works are made and framed
by the artists themselves.
In the Centre we work in workshop groups. Our Centre is open five days
a week (Monday to Friday) and works eight hours a day. We have got many
years of experience in cooperation with local volunteers. We would like
to invite you to our Centre.
Volunteers will live in a flat specially rented for them and fully
living up to their needs. There they will have all the possibilities to
live and cook on their own.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers:
First of all, it will be your task to cooperate with the person in
charge of a workshop group (especially theatre one). There are a lot of
such groups. They perform a number of artistic activities. While
working together with the group leader and with the disabled people you
will learn how to make a stained glass or a cloth. You will also learn
how to weave a wicker basket, get down to painting and sculpture, make
all sorts of things out of paper and how to cook healthy and delicious
meals. Other skill that the volunteer can learn is the ability to
accompany the handicapped people in their self-dependence process at
work.
You will have a chance to see and use the methods of activating elderly
and also give your own ideas. You will have an opportunity of
experiencing a close contact with people you will work with, and its
healing effects on both of you.
We would like you to help organize exhibitions of arts, theatre
performances, sports competitions, dancing parties and other types of
integration events. In the framework of workshop activities we will
arrange meetings during which you will have the opportunity to present
your native language and culture.
We cooperate with local schools. It is very important for us that a
volunteer from abroad should help us to make local community aware of
the achievements and skills of people with disabilities. We would like
to organize meetings, sightseeing trips, language courses and talks
with young people.
We are open to your ideas and proposals. You will also help to organize
holiday camps for children, acting as a group leader's assistant. If
you don't speak our language, that is not an obstacle to working with
disabled people. You will find it possible to overcome a lot of
barriers. We will enable you and other volunteers from different
countries to acquire new skills, exchange your experiences and develop
your potential. We would like you and others to get to know our
country, culture and language.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:
We would like you to be:
- willing to cooperate with disabled people (we will welcome a volunteer with an earlier practice),
- open to new experiences, full of ideas,
- artistically talented and imaginative,
- spontaneous, cheerful, creative and responsible,
We would be glad if you had any theatre experience.
Although we are the catholic organisation, the religion of the
volunteer does not matter. We are open for people of different faith
D. Risk prevention, protection and safety:
During the realization of the project it is incredibly important to
prevent conflict situations because well-being of each person is
essential for us. Not to let any conflicts occur, as a host
organisation, we take on many different verbal and nonverbal activities
to make the work pleasant and peaceful for everybody taking part in the
project. Extremely important thing seems to be choosing supervisors for
the volunteers very conscientiously, especially looking for his or her
fluent communication with others. The supervisor, as a detached person
who is not involved in the project, can be invited as help to solve
some conflicts concerning the volunteer.
