Salzburg's Community Radio
Salzburg's Community Radio
It offers a platform to different people, especially to those who don't have a voice in other media because of social, racist, sexist or other kind of discrimination. Our aim is to encourage civil society, the communication between cultures and generations and the equality of the sexes.
About the project environment and local community:
Salzburg is the fourth biggest city in Austria (170.000 inhabitants). It
is situated 300 km west of Vienna right at the border to Germany. Apart
from Vienna Salzburg is THE city in Austria to attract tourism. The
beautiful old part of the city is overlooked by an impressive fortress
on a hill. The region around Salzburg is very scenic with lakes and
mountains allowing a lot of leisure-time activities. The city is
renowned for its musical festivals (summer and Easter). There is also an
university at which 20.000 students are enrolled.
Radiofabrik is located in a city quarter called "Nonntal". It´s about 5
min walking distance from the old town of the city and has therefore an
advantageous location. It is part of the cultural complex ARGE
Kulturgelaende, a place where many different cultural events take place -
concerts, cabarets, parties, events. In this (new) building we have
about 120 sqm: big office for all team members and volunteers, two
studios (one for broadcasting, one for producing) and a seminar room. We
have a small kitchen, where we can make coffee, tea etc.
Within the complex there is also kind of pub/restaurant which is quite
renown in Salzburg as an alternative meeting place for people interested
in arts and culture. Just next to the ARGE Kulturgelaende and the
Radiofabrik there is a big international youth hostel, a school complex,
an art gallery and the sports union of Salzburg with a big sports
ground and indoor sport halls. The "Nonntal" is a quite old part of the
city and you can find a nice mixture of quite narrow streets and squares
and modern buildings and shops
Proposed Activities
One of our aims - among others - is the transfer of know-how and
competence in media. Especially young people should learn to express
their opinions freely. In addition they should also gain technical
experience. With the project 'European Voluntary Service' this aim is
also linked to one of our further principles: the exchange of
information and experience across the borders. The Project 'European
Voluntary Service' is in line with our philosophy, to be a platform that
connects cultures and also generations.
The volunteer can learn a lot about radio journalism, moderation and
radio techniques. She/he will be a part of the team, especially of the
editorial staff. After the time working here she/he will be able to make
an own radio program and got an insight in and an overview over the
work of an (non commercial) radio station (and also of an institution,
that carries out many projects).
In the first weeks the volunteer will get to know the whole studio and
learn about all the technical facilities. The volunteer will get a
complete introduction to all the technical and computerised appliances
and she/he will have the possibility to learn about this step by step.
Then the volunteer should be ready for the following tasks.
The volunteer should support the staff in tasks such as: run errands,
take care of the office supply, take care of the technical devices that
can be rented, take care and programming the automatic play-list manager
> working with the program: YARM (yet another radio manager)(to
archive, help with the renting of it).
It would be wished after the first time of introduction for that the
volunteer also gets creative and makes his/her own broadcast (whatever
the topic will be - and even in her/his own language or in two
languages.) The first contribution to the program will be cultural event
tips, which is good for training the technical abilities, the
moderation, the journalistic methods and so on. After that she/he will
be sent to press conferences and cultural events will produce short
reports.
As soon as the volunteer is fully acquainted with the studio and the
surrounding and s/he feels comfortable and able to do so s/he would be
offered to develop an own project: e.g. initiate and produce an own
programme together with other youth, emphasise on a cultural exchange
between the Radiofabrik and other free radio stations within Austria or
with other countries (probably the country s/he comes from) and exchange
ideas and broadcasts with them.
If the volunteer wants to she/he can make his/her own contribution to
the homepage.
Volunteer profile
The volunteer should have technical interest and interest in radio. She/he should be motivated for creating own inputs for the radio, work independently and be creative. Some experience (study, job…) in media or cultural institutions would be fine, but is not necessary.
Previous experience in the field of radio prodcasting is not required. German skills would be prefered, but are not necessary.
