Harbour city situated at the end of the maritime Danube. It is one of
the oldest cities of Wallachia (region of Romania), first mentioned in
an official document on January 20, 1368.
The city evolved from the
little fishermen village that it was around 1300, to the harbour of
intense commercial exchange, once the main commercial road of the
country was established between Transilvania and the Black Sea.
During the Turkish administration (1538-1829) the harbour kept its
importance, maintaining the traditional commercial links, the only
difference being that most of the exported products were destined for
Istanbul. During this period Br?ila was the spiritual center of all the
Christians living in the territories under Turkish administration.
The emancipation of the city and of the harbour is based on the falling
of the Braila fortification, the most powerful Turkish fortress on the
Lower Danube.
Br?ila was rebuilt after a modern town-planning, which has made the
city look original. The medieval settlement was systematized and the
slopes of the ground, oriented in the shape of an amphitheatre facing
the Danube, were put into value.
Once the harbour received the porto-franco status, in Br?ila settled
many Romanian and foreign merchants: Italians, Greeks, Jews, Armenians,
British, French and Russians. The cosmopolitan character of the
population, their prosperous situation, the attraction for the
occidental civilization determined the town-planning and architecture.
The buildings around the central square adorn the city and they mark
its evolution throughout time. Monumental constructions expressing
through their architecture the social status of the owners - great
merchants, farmers and industrialists - are lined up along the streets
of Br?ila.
The old city center keeps alive the memory of many cultural and
scientific personalities of European level who were born in Br?ila
thanks to the memorial houses and centers of the city. Hariclea
Darclee, the legendary Romanian soprano, Panait Istrati, Romanian
writer of both Romanian and French languages and Ana Aslan, specialist
in gerontology are some examples of this kind.
Braila has a population of 216929 inhabitants. At the present moment in
town there are about 50 schools, over 10 highschools and colleges, and
2 universities "Dunarea de Jos" si "Constantin Brancoveanu", each with
multiple sections. Since 2004 to 2008 took place The European Theatre
Festival in Braila, once in 2 years. From 2008, this becomes an annual
event. The town disposes of a major movie theatre, The Youth Cultural
House, The Puppet Theatre, The District Library with a large book fund.
"Maria Filotti" Theatre in Braila was built in 1896 as "The Rally
Theatre". In 1919 it becomes "The Communal Theatre", in 1949, "The
State Theatre Braila-Galati", si in 1969, obtains the present name, in
honour of the Romanian actress Maria Filotti (1883-1956).
We underline the remarkable living together traditions of the
population of diverse ethnic minorities in a harmony that can be
promoted as a model on national and international level, what creates a
harmonious frame of progress, which can represent a human valuable
potential.
About the Braila district: localized in the S-E of the country, having
a lowland relief, a temperate-continental climate and a population of
373199 inhabitants. People's activities are: agriculture,
constructions, transport, post office, communications, financial
activities, real-estate transactions, public administration, health.
The Salt Lake is a commune of the Braila District. Inside the commune
lies a salt lake and on its borders raised the station with the same
name. The beginnings of the station dates from the 2nd half of the 19th
century, the first establishments being described by the writer
Alexandru Vlahuta in Picturesquely Romania. In the first years of the
20th century the station was connected with the city through a tram-way
that works even today. In the inter-war period it had the statute of
Royal Station.
