Swedish youth project needs EVS support
Swedish youth project needs EVS support
The volunteer will be involved in the daily activities in one of several arenas where youth from another country and Swedish can meet.
Project environment
Kalmar is a harbour city in south-east of Sweden with 60 000
inhabitants. Kalmar is one of the oldest towns in the province with an
interesting historical background. There is the Castle of Kalmar which
was built in the late 13th century. The Warship Kronan Exhibition
located at Museum of Kalmar, the cathedral, all in the centre of the
genuine and well preserved city. Located in the middle of the center is
also our guest harbour, well used and widely known. The citizens of
Kalmar see culture as an important contributor to the city. Active
associations contribute to the diversity of cultural life. The many art
galleries, museums, theatres and churches are just some of what Kalmar
can offer.
In Kalmar, where ever you go, nature is close at hand. The old city
park was originally plan at the end of 19th century and is right by the
castle. If you want to enjoy the countryside, take a trip to Stensö or
Värsnäs, two of Kalmar`s most popular recreation areas. Not far from
town there is the 4H-farm with the animals and well preserved main
buildings creating the atmosphere of a country farm.
The university of Kalmar have with it`s 8 000 student, fields such as
marine officer training courses, natural sciences, automation,
environment, media and tourism. All of the University faculties are in
the city center. Kalmar is located between the island of Öland and the
"Kingdom of Glass", the region attracts more than 2,5 million tourists
each year. From Kalmar Airport you can reach to Copenhagen and Stockhom
daily and there is weekly charter to warmer destination. The high speed
train X2000, provides direct services to Copenhagen, Stockholm and
Gothenburg. For more information: www.kalmar.se
Rules and regulations
The volunteer are going to have rules about cleaning the apartments so
each of the volunteers help out. When you live together with others
it´s important to respect each others privacy. If somebody is going to
have some friends over it´s important to ask and respect the other
volunteers decision. If problems occur the mentor is going to help the
volunteers to solve the problems.
We allways try to find apartments so the volunteers can live two and
two. We also have three studentrooms where the volunteers share common
tv-room, shower and toilettes.
Service and learning opportunities
The motivation of 4H-farm is to be able to be one of several arenas
where youth from another country and Swedish can meet. Together with
the volunteer the members of 4H are able to learn and exchange
knowledge about their own swedish culture and the volunteers culture.
Some of the members cant talk english so in the language learning
progress they ought to try other forms to understand each other than
the language, to get to know each other. In this progress we have seen
that that all involved even learn more about their own culture and
increase the understanding between the youth and their different within
social, cultural and individual backgrounds. With the help of their
common interest, in this it would be the animals, they could exchange
ideas and experience. The hope of 4H is that it could stimulate the
members to be a volunteer and travel and be able to see other
countries. This will hopefully give the volunteer a personal growth and
increase his/her self-esteem both for them and the 4H members. It will
also open their eyes for Europe and all the opportunities that EVS can
offer. In everything the volunteer would do, he/she will act by 4h:s
motto: Learning by doing. The best way to learn is by doing it, and if
it doesn´t work , you try and try until you know it. There is never a
problem to do mistakes; this is the way you learn!
The language training is going to be in Kalmar with all of the others
volunteer, there are going to be at least ten volunteers in
Kalmar, including two in Öland. We are going to have a teacher that
works with the Swedish language education. In the beginning the
training is going to be more intensive and as time goes by, the time
between the lessons are going to be increase.
Role of the EVS-volunteer
The volunteers' role would be to become an extra resource for the
organisation and be a part of the staff. With her/his active
participant in the 4H-farm we hope to give her/him new skills and
competence. The volunteer will also contribute to the local inhabitants
with her/his connections to the youth we hope it stimulate them to
become future volunteers.
Kumulus that is the coordinating organisation would also use the
volunteers in the promotion of EVS. With the contribution of the
volunteer we hope to create a firm platform for further hosting and
stability for the volunteers to be. This would encourage the
establishment of new partnership and the exchange of experience between
partners. This would be the best promotion of the EVS program.
Activities for the volunteer
The activities in with the volunteer will be invited to take an active
part is in several of different areas. The club has been active since
1970 and is the center of the farm, both in responsibility of what the
farm will work with and the staff. The volunteer would have an active
part in both of the club and in the farm.
Together with members organized our courses within:
Members own choice ( cooking, baking, handball, modelling etc.)
How you treat your rabbit
We also have different events that we offer:
Midsummer´s Eve
Café, where we sale ice cream and coffee
We have several events that takes place in our recreation area, for
example: Church day, Rock festival, Walpurgis, Tenant day, Christmas
market and 4H-day.
Guidance of the area with information about the buildings and the animals.
Our hope is that we can find several assignments for the volunteer
depending of his/hers own skills, interest and wishes. He/She is going
to work with youth and encourage them to be more active and our hope
that they would want to be a volunteer themselves. The volunteer will
also be supporting the youth in their meetings. It´s important that the
volunteer is flexible, and can come with her/his own idea. Our frame is
the youth we help them realize their ideas. It can be to have a movie
night or to raise money to be able to buy a pig to the farm. Our motto
is: Learning by doing which is the best way to learn. When working with
the youth it´s very important to be able to listen and talk with them.
Together with them solve problems that can turn up. Within Kumulus
which is the coordinate organisation the volunteer will be involved to
spread the information about EVS to the youth. He/she will also be a
support to the future planning of sending and hosting volunteers. With
he/his experience of study and working abroad we think that the
volunteer can inspire the youth to take the step to be a volunteer.
This could also establish new partnerships and experience between
cooperating partners. This is the best promotion of EVS.
Example of a typical day
Morning duty
08:30 - 10:00 Feeding the animals
10:30 -15:00 Cleaning the stables, work in the cafe, help to plan activities for the member
Afternoon duty
12:30 - 19:00 Feeding animals, clean, carry water to the animals
enclosure, help to plan activities for the members. work in the cafe.
It´s important to know that the work also is in the afternoon and
evenings. It could happen that some activities take place during the
weekends. This will be substituted with free days during the weekdays.
The volunteer would not work more that 35 hours including language
training. It´s important that the volunteer understands that she/he is
able to influence their schedule.
While recruiting volunteers the emphasis well be put on the skills and
in the flexibility of the person. If the volunteer have worked with
youth and with animal before it´s a great advantage. It´s important to
have a creative mind and open for all sorts of ideas. To be able to
talk and listen. You must be able to take the initiative and be a self
starter. We are open to cooperate with all sorts of organisation.
The volunteer will be asked to provide a CV and a motivation letter.

Risk prevention
All of the volunteers are going to have their supervisor at the
projects. It's with the supervisor they are going to have the daily
contact. If there are any problems it's the supervisor the volunteer
can talk with about the project.
The volunteers are also having a mentor outside the job and education.
It's with the coordinators Claudia Kjellstrand and Mathias Larsson that
the volunteers can talk with if there is some problem at the job,
accommodation or at the spare time. Coordinating is also holding the
private and group meetings with the volunteers. If the volunteer has
any special interest in any sport etc we can help to find a contact
person so he/she can continue with their interest here in Sweden. The
volunteer is also going to the arrival- and midterms course that our
national agency are holding in Stockholm.
