Teaching English in Orpiri, Georgia
Teaching English in Orpiri, Georgia
Volunteer will teach several English classes in local elementary school in Orpiri. The classes will be conducted after 1 p.m. - after regular school lessons finish. The level of the English classes will be mainly beginners. Generally, the level of English in Tkibuli region is rather poor because of the current educational system which is still in transformation.
Volunteer is also mostly welcome to come up with his/her own free time activities for school kids and local youth. The local kids do not have many possibilities how to spend free time actively - their after school activities are usually limited to doing homeworks and walking around with friends. There is also possibility to teach English to adults in Orpiri.
Current EVS volunteer is organizing film nights in Orpiri and volunteer could continue in this activity.

The economic activity in the region mostly stopped after the revolution in 1991 and the quality of life decreased significantly. Today´s major problem of the region is high unemployment (about 50%) and migration of people either to different regions or abroad. Most of the people work in agriculture or commute to work to Kutaisi.
Orpiri is situated in Tkibuli region, Georgia (about 3 hours from capital Tbilisi). The population is about 1 500 inhabitants. The closest city is Kutaisi which is at the same time the second biggest city in Georgia – It takes about 20 minutes by marshrutka (local bus) to get there (marshrutkas run all day).
There is one elementary school and kids from surrounding villages commute here as well. The school has about 150 kids.
