The Education and Youth Council from Spain is looking for one EVS volunteer
The Education and Youth Council offers to a young women the opportunity of working with youth from the field of non-formal education.
The project will take place in the city of Segovia.
Segovia was declared by the UNESCO as a Human Heritage. Some of the
buildings which have made this possible are: Roman aqueduct, tower of
San Esteban, Monastery of El Parral, Church of the Vera Cruz or the
Alcazar (Palace).
Segovia is a Spanish city in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y
León, capital of the province of Segovia. It is located in the interior
of the Iberian Peninsule, near Valladolid, capital of the region, and
Madrid, being well communicated. Segovia is one of the nine provinces
in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. Limits: at the North
with Burgos and Valladolid, at the West with Avila, at the South with
Madrid and Guadalajara and at the East with Soria.

Population: 57,206 inhabitants (14,096 youth, that is, 24.64%).
Nationality of youth: 79% - Spanish; 21% different nationalities, being Bulgarian and Polish people the most important groups.
Economic data: unemployment (Decembre, 2007): 1,893 people (764 youth, that is, 40,35%; 370 men and 394 women).
Leisure habits: according to a questionnaire done by the City Council,
youth like to listen to music, go out with friends, occasionally go to
the cinema and short trips.
There is a high participation quote, as 1/3 of all youth participates actively in youth organisations.
The Youth and Education Council has agreements with different youth
associations to carry out activities, lend material or allow meetings
in its premises.
The volunteers will be hosted in a flat for 4 people, with kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and a living room.
Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
The Education and Youth Council offers the opportunity of working with youth from the field of non-formal education:
-Health education
-Consume education
-Social abilities
-Sport and leisure activities
-Language exchange activities
-Collaboration in diffusion of programmes and activities organised by the Council
-Learn about how the Youth Information Centre works (it offers
information, counselling and guidance related with employment, grants,
contests...)
-Form part of a young, multidiscipline team, willing to work for and with youth
During their stay in the Youth and Education Council, volunteers will
be supervised at every moment by the mentor and will participate in the
following sort of tasks:
-Planning activities of the council
-Accompany colleages in diffusion activities of the Council
-Participate in the planned leisure activities
-Participate in activities for the prevention of harmful habits in schools in the city
-Participate in the elaboration of published material done by the Youth Information Centre
They will also have the opportunity of carrying out a small
intervention project with disfavoured youth, learning about all the
needed stages to plan it and carry it out. First, a study is done to
see the lacks and concerns of the group. Then, the aims are
established, as well as the activities to fulfil them and the needed
resources. At the end of the project, there will be an evaluation and
write a report.
The specific activities of the volunteers depend on their communication
abilities and academic education. Volunteers may carry out a workshop
in the Council (we organise workshops), depending on their skills. For
example, if volunteers have skills in graphic design, they may carry
out a workshop about photograph retouching.
To carry out workshops, volunteers count with the support of the mentor
and rest of colleagues in the Council, who will guide them with
justifications, methodology or diffusion of the workshop.
Apart from this project, volunteers may provide suggestions for leisure
activities and accompany staff in planned activities, in which they may
participate, not only during the planning stage, but also during their
execution and analisys.
Time of activity: mornings or afternoons, there may be activities on weekends, maximum of 7 hours/day; 2 free days/week
Example of day of activity:
From 9 to 13 hours: organisation, planning and preparation of the week
activities (3 mornings), sessions in primary and secondary schools.
From 17 to 19 hours: workshop (once a week), non-formal education activities in the Youth House (2 afternoons).
Profile of the volunteer(s) and selection process:
Volunteering offers will be published in our web and distributed in existing networks, such as youthnetworks, EVS Yahoo, etc.
Profile of volunteers:
-Age: between 18-30 years
-Due to the activities carried out, language skills will be an asset.
-Skills: team work, initiative and interest to participate in the
activities, good interpersonal skills, interest to know about youth
from other ethnic and cultural groups, motivation to carry out
workshops.
A commission formed by the following people will carry out the recruitment:
-youth coordinator
-mentor
-another Council's staff member

Prevention of risks, security and protection:
Accommodation in Segovia: in a flat, with the legally established measures of prevention of risks.
Volunteers are covered by a civil responsibility insurance of the City
Council for the activities it organises, the insurance of the EC and
the assistance of all staff in the Council.
During the first weeks, volunteers will receive information from the
mentor about emergency phone numbers and urgency services in Segovia,
as well as the conditions for the use of vehicles, alcohol and tobacco
regulations,... and they will receive a 24 hour emergency phone number.
The service for prevention of risks in the City Council will inform
about eventual working risks of the activities, as well as the needed
protection measures for open air activities.
