Volunteer for people with a serious mental handicap
Volunteer for people with a serious mental handicap
The project deals with people with a serious mental handicap; most of them have a low (or very low) physical and mental autonomy. That’s why the volunteer has to be also REALLY motivated to work with that kind of people.
Project activity
Ojectives of the project will be to support the staff in the daily practice of educative and rehabilitative activities with our disabled residents: with laboratories, leisure activities and physiotherapist practice. The volunteer will favor the contact and the exchange among multicultural diversity in the practice with handicap; and he/she will create around our residents a climate suitable for socialization.
The volunteer will partecipate on this process in a gradual way; on the beginning it will be necessary to deepen the italian language knowledge and to get know the dinamics of our organisation. After it he/she can interact more in the daily activities with aggregativ initiatives. In the tasks of the volunteer there will be also to participate to the équipe meetings and to give her contribution to the realization of the educative and recreative activities.
We offer to The volunteer the possibility to develop a personal project inside the normal activities of the center. We give him/her a period where he/she will see and will take part in each activity in order to make him/her understand what is more interesting for him/her and after he/she can integrate his/her new ideas, which he/she had proposed during the preparation phase of this project.
He/She will support the animation staff in the daily practice with:
Educative activities are meetings guided by instructors specialised in art-therapy, using the method of “multi-languages stimulation” (a global therapy method in which all the senses are stimulated); these workshops can regard the following areas:
· creative art (spatial art, art using recycled materials, painting, handling basic elements such as water, clay and salt)
· listening to sounds or melodies or producing them with instruments or vocally.
· looking at images or forms that the group has produced in interaction with each other
· moving one’s body with or without instructions.
Recreative activities are trips to the countryside or on the seaside, parties etc.
All these therapeutic activities, as well as others, are aimed at increasing the importance of the body memory, which helps to further the reacquisition, the knowledge and the realisation of oneself, and one’s history. This enhances the importance and originality of each individual, because even those with grave disabilities, when guided, can explore new horizons and become aware of the range of experiences, emotions and sensations that all human beings have. The workshops are realised either in groups or individually.
Outside this general activities which offers our village The volunteer will take specially care about the contact between our residents and their families. he/She will help them to visit their families ( for the permanent residents) and to give a psychological support to our residents who don’t have any contact with the family or who don’t have a family. He/She will also take our residents for walks outside the structure. In this way our disabled people will have the chance to contact and socialize with the local community.
The supervisor of the project who will introduce the volunteer in the life in the organisation and in the project will be Nicla Morfini. She will present the volunteer the animation staff, the responsible educators of the various activities and she will be available for every question or problem during the whole duration of the project. Nicla Morfini will meet The volunteer regolarly and discuss with him/her the planned project activities.
During the service, The volunteer is not directly responsible of the residents (disabled people), he/she has simply to follow the instructions of the animation staff. In other words he/she will not be left alone with the residents, as his/her role is to support the instructors in their work. What is more, he/she will be in continuous contact with responsible educators of the various activities and will be able to ask advice whenever needed.
