Youth Center from Istanbul has 3 free EVS volunteers places
Volunteering for the daily tasks of Youth Center: Taking part in local and national projects in different cities; Participating to the TOG Youth Council which happens twice a year; Taking part in international projects; Helping to promote European Voluntary Service among young local volunteers; S/he may come up with his/her idea of a project/workshop and tasks according to his/her interests and skills.
Project environment:
Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary activities,
including the local community where the project will take place (e.g.
geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement
is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and
conditions that apply also for the volunteer.
The volunteer will be hosted according to the project he has chosen as
there are six different projects taking place in six different cities.
Istanbul is a metropolis with over 12 million inhabitants it is full of
plenty of shops, festivals, nightlife, and other opportunities.
Istanbul has been a conjunction of different religions, ethnicities,
languages, political stands and so forth. It has some problems due to
being a metropolis such as traffic, higher prices, higher rate of
crime, great slums and so on. However, it is one of the most
worth-seeing cities of the world.
Izmir is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country's
largest port after Ýstanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Ýzmir, by the
Aegean Sea. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past,
and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement
patterns. The city hosts an international arts festival during June and
July, and the Ýzmir International Fair, one among the city's many fair
and exhibition events, is held in the beginning of September every year.
Izmir Coordination Center has just been established in the center of
Alsancak, a very busy district of Izmir. It has two rooms and a hall.
One of the rooms is used as the room of the coordinator. The other room
and the hall are used for the activities. University Student TOG Clubs
are organising their activities in the coordination center. Because
that the coordination center has just established,it needs to be
activated so the volunteers should be very motivated to organise
activities or workshops.
Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city
after Istanbul. The city has a population of 4,319,167. Centrally
located in Anatolia, Ankara is an important commercial and industrial
city. It is the center of the Turkish Government, and houses all
foreign embassies. It is an important crossroads of trade,
strategically located at the center of Turkey's highway and railway
networks, and serves as the marketing center for the surrounding
agricultural area.
Ankara Coordination Centre: The centre is located in Kizilay, the
centre of the city.In the centre, there are three rooms and a hall
where the meetings of the projects,work or university groups take
place. Besides activities like movie showing, workshops, conversation
clubs etc... are provided.
Diyarbakýr is a major city in the Southeast of the Republic of Turkey.
Situated on the banks of the River Tigris it has a population of
800,000. It is the second largest city in Turkey's South-eastern
Anatolia region. Within Turkey, Diyarbakýr is famed for its culture and
folklore. From Hurris 3000 B.C. to Ottomans, Diyarbakir has hosted more
than 26 different nations in its land.
Diyarbakir Coordination Center is in the center of the city and easy to
reach by public transportation. It has two rooms provided for the use
of the volunteers. The coordination center is the place for the
volunteers and the local people to meet and share. University student
TOG Clubs organise activities like movie showing, courses and projects.
Samsun is a city in northern Turkey, on the coast of the Black Sea,
with a population of 439,000. It is an important port. Samsun is
situated between two river deltas which jut into the Black Sea. It is
located at the end of an ancient route from Cappadocia: the Amisos of
antiquity lay on the headland northwest of the modern city. Samsun has
a humid, temperate, marine climate with cool winters and warm summers
and high rainfall throughout the year. In Samsun, there are two youth
service centres;
Samsun Atakum Youth Service Center has been established by the
cooperation of the local administration, the university and TOG in
2002. It is a prefabricated building that includes a computer class,
four classes, a multipurpose class, a room for the volunteers and a
room for the coordinator. The amphitheatre in the youth service centre
is used for outdoor activities. The volunteers (most of them are
university students) are doing voluntary work, and also receive
trainings and courses in order to develop themselves. The Youth Service
Centre also provides service to local people.
Samsun 19 Mayis Youth Service Centre has been established in a town 25
kms far from the centre of Samsun city. The centre includes a computer
class, a hall for drama activities, a conference hall, three classes, a
guestroom for 26 persons and a room for volunteers. Besides providing
language and computer courses, in the centre also young people are
supported in order to increase their succes at school. The centre
organises art activities like inviting theatre groups and opening
exhibitions. Also thematic conferences for the local people are
organised by the centre.
Van is a city in eastern Turkey and is located on the plain extending
from the Lake Van, at a distance of 5 kilometers from the lake shore.
It has often been called "The Pearl of the East" because of the beauty
of its surrounding landscape. The city is home to Van Yüzüncü Yýl
Üniversitesi (Van 100th Year University). The history of the city Van
has an extensive inherit of culture and social structure. Being lastly
the capital of Urartu civilization, Van had hosted various
civilisations. Named as Tuspa before, Van owes the Lake Van much for
its beauty. The Lake Van is the largest lake of the entire country. The
local people call it "sea" due to its wideness. On the lake, there is
the Island Akdamar and the church where was the birthplace of the
Grogarian Doctrine. The Van Castle, the Hosap Castle, the Waterfall
Muradiye are the other historical and natural beauties of the city.
Van Youth Service Center is a 3 storeyed building settled on a 1000 m2
area in the city center of Van. In the center, all the activities are
organised and run by the volunteers. Neither politic or commercial
activities are allowed. In the center, there is a library, a hall used
for theatre-drama activities and movie showings, a hall for embroidery,
a computer class, a room for directors, a room for volunteers, a unit
for creating the projects and four classes used for various courses and
activities. In the center, various courses are provided like
traditional folklore dances, drama, theatre, computer skills, English,
marbling art, embroidery, baðlama (a plucked instrument with three
double strings and a long neck), guitar, violin, flageolet, salsa and
cha cha dance. Besides, the trainings for volunteers to increase the
personal development are provided. Van Youth Service Center recently
has 40 active volunteers doing voluntary work and renders service to
500 persons.
In the project there will be some field visits to all parts of Turkey.
Turkey is a big country with various regions with different cultural,
political, economical and social statuses. Therefore, volunteer can
experience very different atmospheres (western, conservative,
culturally lively, undeveloped etc.)

Volunteer profiles and recruitment process:
The EVS volunteers should have at least basic level of English and computer skills.
They are better to tend to create new ideas and break the routine.
The EVS volunteers should be motivated and patient to learn about TOG as it has a complex structure.
They are also expected to like travelling and tend to learn other cities in Turkey.
Since they will work together with university students, we prefer volunteers having experience on university life.
We prefer to work with established sending organisations that we can exchange our knowledge on Youth Work.
Risk prevention, protection and safety:
The EVS volunteers will be supported by local volunteers and professionals. The working places indoors and outdoors are safe for young people.Turkey
