The youth and culture centre "CORNER" in the city district of Itzling
was founded in 1998 with the support of the city council of Salzburg.
Together with the local young people the centre has been designed,
created and partly adapted. In the year 1999, our youth centre has been
inaugurated and since then we are trying to offer our youth an
interesting programme and cultural events. The centre considers itself
as a meeting place and shelter for 14 to 21 year old youngsters.
The young people coming to our centre are mainly from the city district
Itzling. Our target group is a as much as possible balanced and diverse
young public as to concerning gender, ethnical and social background.
Activities carried out by the youth centre: Inernetcafé, open running:
music, games, discussions, chats..., DJ parties, specific projects,
youth exchanges, theatre, own radio emission ...
Since 2001 we have regular DJ parties or open stage for young people
who would like to try out or present their musical skills and
abilities. Each month there is a live presentation of young bands and
the especially arranged music-lessons are carried out by professional
teachers. We dispose of a room and equipment for cutting films and
audiovisual material. We also have got a sound studio for our young
visitors. Two times a month we have got a radio emission on the local
radio frequence of "Radiofabrik". Workshops realized in the centre have
got a sociocultural, creative, sociopolitical, sportive or musical
background. A special room for girls has been constructed. We also try
to set up special activities/projects for target groups like "girls",
"boys", "migrants" ..
Even the international aspect is very important for our centre, so each
year we host one european volunteer and take part in or arrange
international youth exchanges.
Furthermore we try to make co-operative activities with other institutions or associations of Salzburg.
The team working at the youth centre consists out of the leader of the
youth centre, two youth workers, an EVS volunteer and about 10
free-lance workers for special workshops/projects/lessons..
The only rules applying to the running of the youth centre are: no
violence, no alcohol no drugs and normally we do not involve young
people under 14 or over 21, because there are other organisations for
this target group.
Our opening-hours are:
Tuesday: 16:00- 19:00 -teenager afternoon
Tuesday- Saturday 16:00 - 20:00 - Internetcafé
Thursday- Saturday*: 16:00 - 22:00 - open running of the youth centre
* On Saturdays, except if there is a special programme (parties, live performances..) - till 1:00 a.m
Salzburg is the fourth biggest city in Austria (150.000 inhabitants).
It is situated 300 km west of Vienna right at the border to Germany.
Apart from Vienna Salzburg is the city in Austria to attract tourism.
The beautiful old part of the city is overlooked by an impressive
fortress on a hill. The region around Salzburg is very scenic with
lakes and mountains allowing a lot of leisure-time activities. The city
is renowned for its musical festivals (summer and Easter). There is
also a university at which 20.000 students are enrolled.
You can find out more about Salzburg under: http://www.salzburginfo.at .
The youth and culture centre CORNER:
The city district Itzling lies in the north of the centre and is one of
the newer districts in Salzburg. Itzling has got extremely different
social living conditions and during the last years lots of migrants
from Ex-Yugoslavia and Turkey settled down in this city quarter. It has
got a quite good infrastructure and you can reach the city centre
easily by bus (5- 10 minutes). The youth centre is integrated within
the building of a technical high school (Techno-Z) and is situated
close to the river Salzach.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
" Describe what you can offer to volunteers in terms of service and learning opportunities.
" Please, explain what will be the role of EVS volunteers in the host organisation.
" Describe the activities in which the volunteers could be involved and
the activities the volunteers could create in your organisation. Give
examples of typical activities for the volunteers.
The working field of the volunteer is the same as for our team. More
about the general programme of the youth centre you can find under the
description of the youth centre and its activities itself.
An approximate timetable for the volunteer could be like this - 30 hours/week;
10% project related work (radio programme, youth-magazine, workshops..)
60 % supervision and activities with the young people
20 % administration (preparation of events, parties…)
10% meetings and team-sessions
We welcome the volunteer bringing in his/her own ideas for projects or
activities which can be developed during the "general youth centre
times".
For example: one of our former volunteers organized a photo-exhibition;
she took pictures together with our young public, developed the
pictures and made a selection of the best ones.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
We prefer a female volunteer because now there are 2 men and only 1
woman working in the youth centre. Furthermore, a big number of young
people coming to the centre are also male visitors - so we hope to
attract more young girls to our center by hosting a female volunteer -
to encourage equal opportunities.
Basic knowledge of German and of computing would be useful. Flexibility
and motivation to work with young people would be great.
Our coordinating organization is in a network of sending and hosting
organizations for EVS in Europe and tries to involve volunteers from
those organizations. Since the partners know each other well, they can
help select the volunteers and suggest them to us - so that each
volunteer may find the best suitable project - also our project.
D. Special needs (if applicable)
It is in principle possible to host volunteers with fewer opportunities
- especially from economic difficulties and cultural differences. In
this case we would host two volunteers, one of them can be with fewer
opportunities.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
In the first 3-4 weeks, there is training for the volunteers in Corner.
It is very important for corner employees and volunteers to work safe.
In team meeting every week we discuss about the safe living and working
and the possibility of risks. The volunteer can be supported during
working, because she/he works always together with other employees.
